Freshman English...
English Language 1 at Gulfport High
This year-long course will be part of your new journey into the National Common Core Curriculum. During the year, you will develop skills traditionally covered in both English I and English II. Not only will you gain writing and reading skills that will be used throughout the rest of your education, but you will also become prepared for the ACT.
The new common core standards our nation is adopting will make classes such as this more rigorous and challenging, but will better prepare you for the nest step in your life, whether that be college or the work place. You will need to be mature, responsible, and diligent.
Let me take just a minute to tell you about myself. My name is Wesley Rogers. I have been teaching high school English for over 13 years now. I hold a Master's of Education degree and am National Board Certified in English/Language Arts. This is my seventh year teaching here in Gulfport. My wife also teaches English here. We have two children - our daugher, 8, who is in 2nd grade at Bayou View Elementary, and our son, 5, who will be starting kindergarten next year. We love the city of Gulfport and this school district. We plan to raise and educate our two children here in right here. I am completely dedicated to this school system and will do everything I possibly can to help it thrive.
English is so much more than picking out the verb of a sentence or knowing when to use a comma. Our mission at GHS is to create life-long learners who are productive members of society. This class does so by challenging students to become better communicators and better understand others when they communicate. Students in this English class will be forced to decide what they believe in and how to communicate those beliefs and the reasons for them to the rest of the world in order to make this world a better place.
