6th Grade Social Studies Syllabus
Mission
The mission of Gulfport Central Middle School is to provide our students with a strong foundation for lifelong learning in a safe and challenging environment to enable them to reach their maximum potential.

Text: Western Hemisphere
Curriculum:
This year the History Department will be introducing, reinforcing and reviewing many skills to help your child become an outstanding, critical-comprehensive explore r of the Western Hemisphere. During this journey we will focus on Canada, South America, Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean Islands, and also the United States. This is a project-based class that will explore the geography and importance of the regions previously listed in relation to our culture. The curriculum areas that we will focus on this will include the following:
- Mapping the Western Hemisphere
- Migration Patterns
- Economic Interactions
- Five Themes of Geography
- Major land forms/continents in the Western Hemisphere
- Major bodies of water
Rules:
1. Do what I am asked the first time.
2. Be respectful to myself and others
3. Ask permission to speak or leave my seat
4. Be Prapared for class and do my best.
5. Walk in a straight, quiet line.
Classroom Procedures:
1. Upon entering the classroom, collect your folder and work on the warm up exercise.
2. Upon finishing the warm up exercise sit quietly and read the text that is going to be covered for that day.
3. The bulk of class time will be spent on classroom exercises, short lectures with note taking, group work, and in class assignments. Any assignment not completed in class will be considered homework.
4. At the end of class students will work on a reflection exercise covering what was learned in class that day.
5. Before leaving class each day students will pick up around their desks and return their class folders.
Daily Schedule:
- Collect notebook/folder & go to assigned seat
- Begin Bellringer
- Quick Review of Bellringer
- Instruction (lecture, reading, notes, demonstrations)
- Activity (class work, mini-project, other assignments)
- Quick Review/Closure
- Return notebook/folder and Dismiss
Discipline Policy:
- Warning
- student conference
- Detention
- Teacher Conference and Parent Contact

Late Class/Homework Policy:
v Late assignments and tests will only be accepted up to five school days after the due date!
v Each day late will result in a 10% grade reduction up to five school days. On the sixth day, the assignment/test will be a 0%.
v Students will be allowed two days per day missed to make up assignments until the assignment is considered late.
Absent Policy:
If a student has been absent, he/she must check the “Absent Folder” for any missed warm-ups, activities, assignments, and/or journals. The student must sign the day’s lesson to indicate that they have checked the folder. The student must then check with other students at his/her table for additional instructions. After a student has signed the Absent Folder and has checked with other students, they see the teacher for additional instructions, explanations, or materials.
Projects: 6th Grade students will complete one large project per nine weeks with the addition of many smaller projects throughout.
Required Supplies:
¶ 1 inch binder
¶ Paper (loose leaf)
¶ Clear Sheet Protectors (at least 25)
¶ Pencils and large erasers
¶ Colored Pencils (no crayons or markers)
¶ Pencil Bag (to be kept in the binder)
¶Your child will also need 2 folders (no prongs). They will need to be the correct color for that class period. If your child has Social Studies 1st period, he/she will need 2 red folders, 3rd period will need 2 blue folders…etc…
1st—red 3rd—blue 4th—yellow
6th—green 7th--purple
Tests:
- Tests will be administered weekly
Each test may contain a variety of sections including: Matching, Multiple Choice, Interpreting Graphs/Maps/Chart/Documents, Short Answer, and Essay items.

2nd Nine Weeks: North America
3rd Nine Weeks: Central America
4th Nine Weeks South America
