The Five Conponents of Literacy
Our Literacy Block begins at 8:15. This is an uninterrupted block of 90 minutes where we focus on the 5 components of Literacy.
Phonemic Awareness: Children understand spoken words which include syllables, rhymes, and individual sounds.
Phonics: Children use what they understand about letters and their sounds to read and write words.
Vocabulary: Children use both spoken and printed words to communicate with others.
Comprehension: Children's ability to understand what they read and hear.
Fluency: Children read using expression, appropriate speed, and voice tone (intonation). Fluency is the connection between phonics and comprehension.
The Literacy Block
The Literacy block consists of Whole Group Instruction and Small Group Instruction. During Whole Group Instruction, we address all five components of Literacy using various methods of delivery.
Small Group Instruction consists of Guided Reading with the Teacher, Literacy Workstations based on student need, or extra support by either Mrs. Lele.
