Homework
Reading for the first three weeks of first grade will be a review of the letter sounds and sight words. The students will also beging bringing home their reading folders with sight words they will need to be studying daily (see vocabulary woods). Remember to sign the signature page in the reading folder.
Begining September 2nd, the students will begin working in the new reading series. The students will bring home their reading folders on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. You and your child will need to review their vocabulary words, read the stories, and sign the signature page in the folder and return them to school the next day. On Thursdays the children will bring home their reading text book and a signature page. They are to read the stories to you and you must sign the paper and return the book and the signed paper to school on Friday. The students will be tested every Friday over the vocabulary words and story comprehension. For the vocabulary portion of the test, the students must be able to recognize the words not spell them and use them correctly in a sentence. The comprehension portion of the test will consist of questions about the story and will have to choose the correct answer.
After Christmas your child will begin read the majority of their work on their own. Therefore, it is very important for them to begin working more and more independently through out the year.
Language
This year the class will be working on sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation. By the end of the year the students will be writing stories that have a beginning, middle, and end.
Also the students will be completing writing prompts. The students will be given a rubric score of 1,2,3,4,5, or 6. A detailed discription of each score will be sent home in the writing folder, which will be sent home through out the school year with the results of your childs writing samples. Please review your child's writing and sign the folder and return it to school. The rubric can be found in the back pocket on the folder.
