WHAT DOES MY STUDENT DO IF THEY'RE ABSENT?
- I have an inbox/outbox system set up much like a mailbox system.
- If a student is absent, the day that he returns, he must write on a sheet of paper: (1.) his name (2.) class period, and (3)DATE OF ABSENCE(S)
- Student must then place the sheet IN MY INBOX
Each day afterwards the student is to check the "OUTBOX" for specific instructions, attached assignments, a note that may specify when to make or come to an appointment, things needed to be handed in, etc.
Many students are not putting a note in my inbox at all and become upset when they find that they are still responsible for work that was done when they were absent. They somehow expect not to receive zeroes when assignments are due or aren't turned in. THIS IS NOT THE CASE. FAILURE TO NOTIFY ME/GET WORK/TURN IN WORK DUE TO ABSENCE WILL RESULT IN ZEROES.
MANY STUDENTS DO NOT CHECK THE OUTBOX: papers with my reply on them often go weeks at a time, sitting in the "outbox". I will not go searching for a student to hand them my reply/assignments, nor will I stop my class in order to tell an individual what they missed. IT IS THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS LEFT BY ME IN THE OUTBOX.
