Educate Ethiopia

While attending a meeting on Indigenous Outreach International, an organization that supports missionaries in Ethiopia, Brazil, and Germany and started by Patrick Beard (a former Fulton resident and IAHS alumnus), I was introduced to a spinoff program they sponsor called Operation Rescue Ethiopia. I was very excited to hear that for only $20 a month I could help to educate a child in Ethiopia and literally change his/her life. I learned that many children not only live as orphans, sometimes being raised by older siblings, must start working very young just to survive. They do not enjoy many of the things that we consider to be necessities but one thing they do recognize is the value of an education.  For this reason I decided to sponsor a child myself and have Patrick's sister, Arlene Beard Norton, come in and talk to my classes about the Ethiopian child's way of life and the opportunity to give these children a gift no one could take away - an education. My goal was to have each class pitch in and sponsor a child (for a total of 5 children). The day after her visit we discussed whether or not do take on this project and to my amazement, the students didn't discuss whether or not to do it, but, how many they could afford to sponsor, what we could send them, etc.  at the end of the day, my marketing students along with some other altruistic IAHS students had committed to sponsor 17 children! I am so proud of their unselfishness and eagerness to help these people overcome the cycle of poverty. My students will not be asking for handouts to raise their money each month, but they will donate money they have worked for. Many have jobs already, but those who do not will do odd jobs, such as yardwork, housecleaning, babysitting, etc.  to raise the money. GREAT JOB IAHS STUDENTS AND GREAT JOB PARENTS FOR REARING SUCH AWESOME KIDS!
