What is NJHS?

The National Junior Honor Society at madison Accelerated Middle School is more than just an Honor Roll. The honor society chapter establishes rules for membership that are based on a student's outstanding performance in the areas of scholarship, leadership, citizenship, character, and service. These criteria for selection form the foundation upon which the organization and it's activities are built.

Scholarship: Students who have a cumulative grade point average of 85 percent, B, 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or equivalent standard of excellence, or a higher cumulative average set by the local school's Faculty Council, meet the scholarship requirement for membership. These students are then eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, citizenship, and character.

Service: This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit.

Leadership: Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.

Character: The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and generally maintains a good and clean lifestyle.

Citizenship: The student who demonstrates citizenship understands the importance of civic involvement, has a high regard for freedom, justice, and democracy, and demonstrates mature participation and responsibility through involvement with such activities as scouting, community organizations, and school clubs.

It's Easy as 1-2-3

Steps to become a member

  1. Make at least a 3.0 GPA for the first three quarters of school. This will make you eligible for membership.
  2. Do your best to be a student leader at all times.
  3. Follow the school-wide expectations and treat all others with respect. This will increase your points on the staff evaluation of potential members!

What are the expectations if I become a member?

Requirements to maintain membership

  • Keep up the good work on your grades for the fourth quarter.
  • Continue leading in a positive manner.
  • Have no failing grades on weekly progress reports.
  • Maintain a 3.0 grade point average.
  • Participate in a positive manner in our school, NJHS activities, and attend at least 85% of the meetings. (If you are in athletics, you must come to the first 30 minutes of the meeting before going to practice. You will be excused if you have a game.

Community Service

All members of NJHS will need to participate in 30 hours of community service. This can either be done in the school or in the community. If you choose to complete some time in the community, you need to fill out a form and get it signed for Mrs. Parr. Some examples include: attending meetings, working in the School Store, working in the Spartan Bank, volunteering for committees, and working in the concession stand. If you work in the Store, Bank, or  Concession stand, you will also receive a salary in shields.
