Course Overview: Introduction: During the course of the year students will apply algebra learned with geometry, probability, statistics and science. Many real world problems and applications will be explored. Students will learn the use of variables and the applications of algebra in adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. Linear equations will be investigated using graphs and data analysis, rates of change, and slope.

Focus Skill: Solve problems

Portfolio Items: Midterm, Final Exam, Graphing Project, Algebra Review Project

Grading System
• Tests • Quizzes • Class work • Homework • Projects
All of the above sections will be graded by points. The total points earned divided by the total points possible will determine the student's grade.

Text: The University of Chicago School Mathematics Project ALGEBRA , Prentice Hall

Supplies:
• Sharpened pencils and erasers
• Notebook (does not have to be a binder)
• Inexpensive calculator with square root key (Less than $15)
• Graph paper

Homework:
Homework will be assigned daily. It will be graded for completeness and effort using the grading rubric. During most classes, students will have time during class to begin their homework. Homework will be an extension of what was learned in class. It is essential that students stay up to date with their homework in order to succeed.

3 points =100% completed; 2 points for 75-99% completed; 1 point for 50 – 74% completed
• A zero will be given for homework not turned in.
• Homework will be marked down if work is not shown.
• Late homework will be accepted no later than the following class day. It will be marked down 1 point.

Tests and Quizzes
Small 5-10 question quizzes will be given 2-3 times per week on average. They may or may not be announced and will cover material gone over in class and the homework. This is a quick way for me to check for the student’s understanding of the lesson. Large quizzes and tests will be announced far in advance and will be given at the end of each unit or set of related units, respectively. A midterm or final exam will be given at the then end of each semester.

Absences / Late Work
Students are responsible for all work missed during any absences. They should contact fellow students to obtain missed notes and homework assignments.

If the student is absent the day of a test or quiz , it will be taken on the day the student returns to class. Missing a test review day does not excuse them from taking a test or quiz upon their return. It is their responsibility to get the review material from another student.
