Concert repertoire
We have families of many different cultural and religious backgrounds here at Cedar Way Elementary. Music has often been called a "universal language" because of it's ability to connect people to one another in such a powerful way. Although we do not endorse any one particular holiday or religion as a Cedar Way Community, we do seek to acknowledge the existence of these holidays and religions in a balanced way in keeping with Edmonds School District policy. During Cedar Way concerts, you will hear a variety of languages and cultures represented. My goal as your children's music teacher is to expose your children to many different styles of music, and to introduce them to music that is historically or culturally significant. This may include songs to coincide with specific holidays on the traditional calendar, and for members of the Eagle Singers choir, this might also include songs with sacred texts. If at any time something we are doing in class seems to be in contradiction to religious or cultural beliefs your family upholds, please know that your child may choose not to participate. My general policy is that if a song makes a child uncomfortable, they should ask for a copy of the lyrics to take home to discuss with their family. If this discussion takes place, and a parent decides they do not want their child singing a specific song, a note from the parent to me will excuse the child from participation. If at any time you have questions or concerns about what your child is learning in class, please do not hesitate to contact me.
