In-Text Citations

 

  1. (Author #)

-   Last name of the author

-   Page number where you got the information

-   If there is no author, list the title of the article.

 

  1. If you introduce the author nearby, you do not have to put the name in the notation. If you have mentioned the author on the same page or in the same paragraph you just need to put a page number.

 

  1. Websites:

-   Keep ‘em short!

-   If it’s msnbc.com – okay.

-   If it’s much longer – abbreviate it! See me if you have questions about this.

  1. Must refer back to the Works Cited page. What you put in the ( ) must correspond with the information on your Works Cited page.

 

  1. Must be included when using quotes, paraphrases, and summaries!

-   Quote: at the end

1.      “Merry Christmas!” (Claus 5)

-   Paraphrase: at the end!

1.      If you were discussing something here, you would still need to credit your source. This is required! (Ingrao 2)

-   Summary: Just like a paraphrase.

 

  1. Block Quotes: This is when the passage you are quoting in your paper is four lines or longer. It must be set off from the rest of the paper by indenting it. Refer to the example.

 

  1. If you are only using part of a quote, you need to indicate that through punctuation.

-   Example: Partial quote with citation:

1.      “I said to him gently, ‘Hail of bullets.’ Keeping my hand in my pocket. He hit to the floor…” (White Noise 311)

 

A TIP FOR SUCCESS:

 

When in doubt, credit your source. If you have any questions or if you are unsure how to properly include citations in your paper – ASK! Do not be afraid to include citations often, this is a research paper and there should be a lot of sources used!
