2012 Rudd Volleyball Team Roster

Congratulations to the following girls for making the volleyball team for next year.  If you were one of the girls who didn't make the cut, please try again next year.   This is the most difficult part of coaching as it is so hard to pick the ones with not only talent, but also the attitude or personality that goes into a tryout.

For game days, girls will need to bring a snack to eat right after school as we will not have time to stop to get something to eat.  On home game days, we will try to have something for the girls here, like a Subway tray or pizza and the girls will need to bring about $3 to cover the cost of pregame meals.  Also for home games, we will need to provide line judges, scorekeepers, and Libero trackers, so girls will need to do duties during our games and while other teams are playing.  I will have duties on a rotating schedule.

We never really know when other schools will have concession stands or not, so that’s why I suggest a light sack lunch.  Unfortunately, buses are very expensive, and we will need parents to provide rides to away games and tournaments.  Matches consist of the best 2/3 games, and will be 3/5 if only competing with one other team, but most days are made of trimatches.

*I will be scheduling another day during season as Jr. High is allowed 10 playing dates.  Also, a few of our July practices will be play dates with other schools, so the times are subject to change.

***These indicate that Saturday tournaments have not been solidified yet, but I will inform you as soon as they are set.

Rudd Volleyball 2012

We will have volleyball clinics each Wednesday from March 28th through the end of April.  Volleyball tryouts will be May 1-3, 2012.  You will need to wear shorts, tshirt, and court shoes for clinics and tryouts.  Knee pads are not required, but may be helpful if you are an athlete who goes all out and these help avoid gym burns :-)   Any necessary paperwork will be given at clinics, but no one is allowed to tryout for a school sports without permission forms, and athletic consent forms.  If you make the team, please know that you will not be eligible without a sports physical as per the Alabama High School Athletic Association and you may find more  information at their website at www.AHSAA.com

Please note that during clinic, girls will be learning the dynamics of the sport of volleyball, which will require them to run, jump, (sometimes fall) in the efforts to keep the volleyball in constant motion.  Durning tryouts, kids will be assessed on attitude, grades, and athletic ability (in that order).  I am all to aware of the fact that most of the girls in this area have at most been exposed to Nukum and have not played volleyball before now.

For any further questions, please email at sdawkins@jefcoed.com .  Thanks bunches!

Spring 2012 Information Letter

Parents and Potential Players,

This letter is to serve as information for clinics, tryouts, expectations, and guidelines for the Rudd Volleyball program.  First, I understand the fact that this is the first time many of these girls are experiencing the sport of volleyball, which is why I’m having clinics on Wednesdays throughout the month of April before actual tryouts May 1,2, and 3.  Volleyball is a dynamic sport that requires team communication, agility, quickness, and athletic skill.  The requirements for making the team are based on athleticism, behavior, report card grades, and overall attitude.  We had 44 girls come to last week’s clinic and had 56 try out last year for 17 positions.   Please note that if you do not make the team, we still need help with scorekeeping, line calling, as well as help for home games this Fall.  In 21 years of coaching, I can tell you that making cuts for a team is the hardest part of the job, as I wish all kids were actively participants in school activities.

If you make the team, you will be required to have an updated physical from your doctor, which can be printed from the AHSAA.com website under “Physical Forms.”  I know that my co-pay is $35 each time my daughters get a physical, and the insurance company will not pay for the rest of the fee unless it is outside of the 12 month period.  Physicals are good for 12 months, so if yours expires in July, you will need a new one by August.  Players are expected to have rides home after each practice, which I try to keep to 5:30 each day so parents can get here from work, but sometimes we will go until 6:pm depending on what the girls need to work on each week.  Practices this Spring will begin every Tuesday and Wednesday from May 15-30, and resume the week before our first summer tournament, which is on June 16th at Oxford High School.  At the middle-school level, it is a great benefit to attend an individual skills camp, and the best bang for your buck is at Samford(AWESOME cafeteria! Just ask Kim Holland.)  Practices will resume July 23- August 2 then each Monday-Thursday at the start of school.  We do not have the funding to take buses to games, therefore, it is player/parent responsibility to work out carpools to the away games and weekend tournaments.  Due to the shortage of referees, Jr. High games are usually on Monday and Wednesdays as varsity teams mainly use the other days of the week, so if you attend mid-week services at your church, the month of September will be full of volleyball games.   Our weekend tournaments are usually on Saturdays in September leading up to the county tournament, which is usually Thursday-Saturday at the end of Sept or beginning of October.

We will have car washes, bagging groceries, a serve-a-thon,  and team sales to help off-set the cost of equipment, tournament fees, and spirit packs.  Spirit packs will be $250, with $50 of that being donations for state insurance and tournament fees.  Our spirit pack consists of but are not limited to:  spandex, socks, kneepads, shorts, tshirts, shoes, and dufflebags.    Yes, the girls wear spandex to play volleyball, but we wear shorts over them outside of the gym where it is not appropriate. We raise money as a team to buy new jerseys every other year, so they belong to the school as well as balls and equipment.  When we do the team sale of either beef jerky or Papa John’s cards, you will be raising money for your spirit packs.  You may make payments on spirit packs or pay the $250 in one payment, the first $75 is due on May 8th if your child makes the team.  Below is my email and website for further information.

Sincerely,

Volleyball Clubs.....

Hey,

Here is the link for the volleyball clubs in the South Regional area.... www.srva.org , click on "juniors" for clubs and see the local clubs such as Sting, Birmingam Volleyball Club, Alabama Juniors.  I do not endorse the Alabama Slam club, but that is my personal opinion.   There is also opportunity with the Shades Valley YMCA, but I'm not sure if they are part of  the SRVA, so they may not be on that link.  I did see a flyer at UAB last night that was asking for experienced volleyball people who wanted to coach for the Shades Valley YMCA and it had a focus on making volleyball a fun local experience...sounded like a good foundation to me :-)

You may also see www.stingvolleyballclub.com to view the Sting website directly.  Remember that clubs may not have tryouts before the end of the High School Season, which near the end of  October, and most practices and team functions begin around December with season in the Spring.

Have a blessed week!

John Carroll High:

Head down Hwy 79... Cross over Talapoosa and Right onto I-20/59... Get into next to the last LEFT Lane... Merge onto I-65 South and take the Lakeshore exit... not quite a mile past Wildwood, you will see the statue of Mary on the RIGHT... You are now at the entrance of JCHS :-)

Curry High School (Jasper Area):  There are two ways...both about the same distance, I've been the way up I -65 and just like it better, so that's where I'm heading...

#1... From PVHS, turn left onto Hwy 75, cross over Hwy 79 and onto Narrow’s Road.(You may want to stop by Chevron for a tank of gas and food as teenagers may starve on an hour 1/2 journey) Follow straight through blinking light where it turns into Warrior-Majestic for about 7 miles. There will be a green roof log cabin on the left(I love landmarks) and a new subdivision on the right. Turn RIGHT onto the Kimberly Cut-off Road (second road past the subdivision) continue around past Bryan Elementary, then immediate RIGHT onto Stouts Rd. Follow Stouts past the 4-way stop, (which is where we usually turn to get to North Jefferson) and turn RIGHT onto HWY 31.  About a mile up, get into left lane and onto I-65 NORTH for about 19 miles.  Take exit 299 and turn LEFT onto Hwy 69 South and get the heck out of Dodge(City).  Follow Hwy 69 South for about 20 miles.  Turn RIGHT onto Benny Short Rd(1.5 miles), then RIGHT at Burrows Crossing Rd (4.3 miles), LEFT at Drummond Rd(1.3 miles), and finally turn RIGHT onto AL 257 North/ Curry Hwy.  School will be on your left across from cemetary.

#2... From PVHS, turn left onto Hwy 75, then LEFT onto Hwy 79 towards Tarrant.  Turn RIGHT onto Carson Road and follow across I-65(Don't stop at Outback or Blue Moon) Continue onto Hwy 120/Walker Chapel Rd.  (about 4 more miles) then turn LEFT at Coalburg Rd/hwy 120/Shady Grove Rd.   Take the 3rd left onto COALBURG Rd/hwy 77.    Take ramp onto hwy 78 WEST (about 28 miles)   Take exit 65 toward Jasper and RIGHT onto Industrial Pkwy(Look for the Big White Cross).   Turn LEFT at 2nd Red light (Raceway gas station on your right).  Go down highway until you pass Burger King(about 4th light), turn RIGHT at this light onto Airport Road (between CVS and Walgreens).  Take Airport Rd to the end and there will be a red light with a Vulcan gas station on your right.   Take right at this light onto Hwy 257... schools will be about 5-7 miles down on your LEFT.

Simmons Middle:  Head down 79 to I-20 W and then take i-65 South.  Turn right off exit to I459 and stay in right hand lane.  Once you merge onto  Hwy 31, get into LEFT hand lane and turn left at 2nd???  red light AWAY from Crest Cadilac...  you will follow this road about 3 miles through a residential area.  Simmons Middle will be on the left.  Take the second turn lane to the right side of the school.  Our games will be played in the upper gym.  From that side parking lot, you will enter the far right door and the gym will be on you right.  Rudd girls will leave from Rudd at about 6:45 Saturday morning!!!  Have  a blast and remember this is a hectic, fast paced four hours, so make the most of the experience!!!!!

Hoover High:  PVHS tournament on Aug 14, will be from 1: pm to 5:pm.  HYDRATE!

Take LEFT onto Rudd School Road, RIGHT onto Hwy 75, then LEFT onto Centerpoint Parkway.  Turn LEFT onto Sweeney Hollow and continue past Grayson Valley, Walmart, Chick-fil-a, and merge RIGHT onto I-59 South.  Take the I-459 South Exit from the Left hand lane and continue on I-459 past the Galleria.  Take exit 10 (Hwy 150) and stay in middle lane.  Turn LEFT onto Hwy 150 and an immediate RIGHT at the red light as though you were going to the Hoover Met.  Turn LEFT at the 2nd or 3rd red light (Large intersection with a turning lane).  Stay to the right as this road leads past an elementary school and ends at a 3-way stop, and you will need to turn RIGHT.  Hoover High is the next LEFT and the gym is on the right wing of the buildings.

Bragg Middle: Take RIGHT out of RMS, then LEFT on Hwy 79.

Turn RIGHT on Carson Rd. After passing Fultondale High on the left,

Turn RIGHT at the light at the bottom of the hill (Phillips 66 on right).

Cross over Decatur Hwy (Hwy 31).

Continue past Hoover (about 15 miles) on I-459. Take Exit #1 and turn LEFT at the end of the ramp. After crossing the interstate, you’ll see McAdory on the RIGHT. Go through the light and take the back entrance into the school and follow around with the football field on the left. The gym will be on your RIGHT.

Turn RIGHT at Oxmoor Rd ( I think TCBY is on the corner) (1.5 miles)

Turn RIGHT at Mecca Ave (0.3 miles)

Turn RIGHT at Frisco Street (92 ft)

Minor High School:   Follow the directions for Bottenfield Middle(this feeds into Minor HS)  However, you will bear LEFT at the bottom of the ramp when you exit off of Hwy 78.  Minor High will be on the LEFT about 4 miles up.

Bottenfield Middle: Turn onto Hwy 79 towards Tarrant.Turn RIGHT onto Carson Road and follow through Fultondale.

Turn LEFT onto Hwy 31 and merge with I-65 South.

Take the 41st Street Exit bearing to the RIGHT off the ramp.

Continue in LEFT lane as the right becomes a turn only.

Turn RIGHT onto Hwy 78 and follow about 3.2 miles.

Turn RIGHT toward Minor High School bearing RIGHT off the ramp ( 2 quick lights)

Go 0.8 miles and turn LEFT into Bottenfield Middle.

When returning down Hwy 78, you will take the first RIGHT after Arby’s and follow around the horseshoe about a mile. Take LEFT at the first big road and this will carry you under Hwy 78.

Take a RIGHT at the stop sign and this will put you back on 41st Street. Go under overpass and LEFT back onto I-65.

Trussville Middle: Pretend you’re going to McAdory, but don’t turn onto I-59. Instead, continue across I-59 and turn LEFT at Wendy's. Follow this road to the stop sign and turn LEFT The school will be on your right about two miles down.

Irondale Middle: Once again, pretend you’re heading to McAdory on I-459, but take the I-20 West Exit going toward Birmingham. Stay in the far right-hand lane and take the first exit once you get onto I-20 (the Old Leeds Road Exit # 135). At the top of the exit ramp, turn LEFT and cross over the interstate. Shortly, turn RIGHT at the dead end onto Old Leeds Road. You will see the school less than ¼ mile on the RIGHT. (about 30 minutes)

Briarwood (South Campus): Same as Irondale….Continue past I-20, Grants Mill Road, and Liberty Parkway.

Take the Hwy 280 exit merging LEFT at the fork ( stay away from the Summit!) This will be a hairpin ramp where you’ll need to merge to the Right-hand lane and onto Hwy 280 East. Continue about 4 miles and turn RIGHT onto Hwy 119 South (about 3 more miles), then

Turn LEFT onto Briarwood Christian Campus (approx 3rd entrance as Middle School Gym is at the far right-hand corner of campus.
