Indian Volleyball!! 2008 Lady Indians Chosen Back to Section List »

Jefferson County Tournament

Saturday did NOT go as planned.  We came in 3rd place in the tournament to North Jefferson and Bragg, who came in 2nd and 1st respectively.  We stayed for the first of the two matches as Bragg beat North Jefferson in 3 games--- I think the final game score was 18-16.  From what was reported, Bragg went on to defeat North Jefferson in the second match as the Blue Devils had only one loss in this double elimination event.  We just weren't as mentally prepared as the Rockets and Blue Devils.   We had a fantastic season going into the tournament with a record of 13-3 in the county with two wins over Bragg and a split with North Jefferson.... it doesn't matter much if you don't bring it to tournament play---so goes life.  I am very proud of all we accomplished during season... mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally.

So far we're going as planned.  We beat Pleasant Grove soundly the first game, but they came back and made us work really hard to win the second game of the match.  We then went on to do the same with Briarwood taking the second game to win 26-24.  Wow what a night.  I just hope the girls can play to their full potential tomorrow, because we still did not show what we are capable of tonight and a few girls just had rough times on the court.  Something in me says that it will all come together tomorrow.  We will be playing North Jefferson in the 11:AM match as they defeated Bragg in what HAD to have gone to 3 games due to how long the match took.  If we win at 11 tomorrow, then we will play in the finals at 1:PM---probably against Bragg as they will be fighting out of the losers bracket in this double elimination tournament.  Come out to Irondale Middle tomorrow to see some great volleyball action and take part in a great group of fans including all the little Indians who dressed up with the headresses. (Douglas even had the deerskin-looking costume to go with it!!)

9/25/08  I'm trying to download the bracket, but if it doesn't work, then here's the plan....

We will play Pleasant Grove at 7:PM...If we win, we play at 8:PM against the winner of Hueytown and Briarwood.  If we lose, we play Saturday morning at 9:AM.  The plan is to win, play again at 8:PM, win that, then play Saturday at 11:AM against Bragg.

You know my heart...what does yours say??? :-)   Remember, attitude is 100% of what you do!!!!!

Love ya!!!

Mrs. D

Indians looking good!

9/24/08  The Indians came out ready to play tonight defeating both the Helena Panthers and the North Jefferson Blue Devils!  The true inspiration for the win was the spectacular fan support lead by Savannah Price and Rylee Dawkins who showed up in red and gold painted faces and Indian chief headresses!  Thanks to all who came out to support us, including teachers, athletes, and students.  We are at Irondale in the Jefferson County Tournament this Friday and Saturday----TBA.

9/22/08    The Lady Indians had a sloppy loss to Bottenfield tonight, losing the match in two games. We got things together in time for our match with Briarwood winning the match in two games. We have our last home game Wednesday against Helena and North Jefferson. The Jefferson County Tournament will be held this Friday and Saturday at Irondale Middle School. We expect to play two games Friday and 3 or 4 games on Saturday.

9/17/08  The Indians came out victorious tonight over Pleasant Grove and McAdory.  All the girls took part in the wins as we first took on a hard-serving Pleasant Grove team, but the Indians had some hard serves and kills of their own to dish out.  Next we attacked McAdory, and managed to defeat the Jackets in two games.  We only have two days of play left next week.  We travel Monday to Briarwood, and have our last home game of the season Wednesday.  The Jefferson County Tournament is next Friday and Saturday at Irondale.

9/15/08  Once again, the Indians were victorious on the night defeating both Hueytown and Irondale.  The Hueytown match went to three games, but the Irondale match went two games and a win for the Indians.  See you at the home game Wednesday as we take on McAdory and Pleasant Grove.

9/13/08  Wow, what a day at Trussville!  We came out on top after defeating Trussville's 7th graders, then falling to their 8th graders in pool play.  But by the time bracket action started, there was no stopping the Inidans!  We started off defeating H-T's 8th grade rather strongly, then winning the third game of the final match to beat McAdory for the championship.

9/11/08  A HUGE thank you to all the fans who came out to support us last night as we took on North Jefferson and Bragg in volleyball action.  The Indians showed up for a long fight to DOMINATE both matches last night against North Jefferson and then Bragg.  All three matches of the night were very exciting.  We travel to Riverchase Middle School today to play Riverchase and Montevallo, then we are at Trussville Middle School all day Saturday for a tournament.

9/8/08  The Lady Indians defeated Briarwood and Bottenfield tonight at Bottenfield.  The girls really came together and put on a pass-set-hit show!  We have really come a long way in the past 3 weeks, and it is such a joy to watch the girls bring it all together and have such a great time on and off the court!

9/7/08  Our girls did an outstanding job Friday night defeating Briarwood  25-19, 18-25, then 15-10.  Against Clay, we lost the first game 25-19, won the second 27-25, then losing the last game of the match 13-15.

Saturday's action had us losing by 2 points against Pizitz in the final game of the match.  We went on to defeat McAdory in the first round of the tournament play for Saturday.  We then went on to suffer a loss to Homewood in our last match of the day.  We have a full week ahead visiting Bottenfield Monday, home on Wednesday, away at Riverchase Thursday, and a tournament at Trussville on Saturday.  Come support the lady Indians Wednesday as we play Bragg and North Jefferson.

9/3/08

The girls did so well tonight despite some MAJOR mental errors.  Attitudes were great, and we came out on top of McAdory winning the first 2 games.  We didn't fair so well against Pleasant Grove losing the first, winning the second, and losing the third game.  We just seem to struggle with that 3rd game, which only goes to 15 pts.  We've just gotta learn how to set the pace for the game rather than playing "catch up" after falling behind.  When we get it all together without most of the team in a fog of headcolds, we are SOOOOOOOO going to have a bonefide shot at the county title!!!   Fundraising will NOT be a problem if we need to buy a banner on the gym wall that states:  "2008 Jefferson County Volleyball Tournament Champions!!!!!"

Keep up the hard work ladies, and always hold your heads high!!!

Last Wednesday at home....The Lady Indians dominated at home last week with match wins over both Hueytown and Irondale!  We dominated the net with our hits as well as some awesome serving!  Thanks to all the fans who came out to support our ladies at home!  GREAT job!

8/25/08  The Lady Indians came out strong yesterday defeating Bragg in two games… 25 - 21, and 28 - 26. North Jefferson came out on top after three games winning 26 - 24, losing 25 - 8, then winning the match 15 - 9.

Come out Wednesday for our first home game. STUDENTS… for $1.00, you can enjoy up to 3 hours of exciting volleyball action, concessions, and a chance to see our Lady Indians defeat Hueytown and Irondale Middle. See Mrs. Dawkins, Coach Hubbard, or Coach Thigpen Wednesday for your $1.00 student ticket.

2008 Season ...

All girls signed up for tryouts should have gotten a 3 page document today outlining all requirements for tryouts and season funding.   All other paperwork will be handed out Friday for girls who make the 2008 team.  June workout schedules will be given for each girl to work on at home.   Then, we will begin workouts in July as a team.  Our regular season practices will start after our team camp on July 28-31.  Payments need to be made for camp by July 2, 2008, and spirit pack/tournament fees need to be paid  by September.

Be advised that each young lady making the team will be required to attend the volleyball camp we will have at Fultondale HS on July 28, 29, 30, and 31,  from 8:am-4:pm.  It will be a 3-5 day camp run by one of the top volleyball coaches in the state who has coached college, high school, and now heads up the Sting Volleyball Club.  The cost will be around $125, which is a wonderful deal, especially when compared to similar camps at surrounding Universities.  You are also more than welcome to attend additional volleyball camps during the summer.   Many camps are available throughout the state and surrounding states, most of which are offered in July.  I can give you camp information for any additional camps that you'd like to attend.  You may visit most college websites to view camps offered in the summer.   Local camps include:  UAB, Samford, Montevallo, Alabama, UAH, etc.  I will be attending the University of Florida camp this July as well.  We will begin actual practice after our team camp at Fultondale.  Our spirit packs will be around $150 plus $25 tournament entry fees, and we will have a fund raiser bagging groceries at Winn Dixie on Friday and Saturday, May 9-10.(Proceeds go toward new volleyballs and referee fees).

Our faculty vs. girls volleyball game was after SAT/ARMT testing on Thursday, April 17.  Both sides came out victorious and we old-timers were probably a bit more sore than the girls the next day!! Remember that we are out for a weather day on April 18.   If you need any further information, write me at sdawkins@jefcoed.com.  Thanks!  Mrs. Dawkins

Directions to Playing Sites..

Directions to Riverchase Middle School are: Take I-65 South towards Montgomery. You will take exit 247-Valleydale Road. Turn right onto Valleydale Road and get in the left lane and as you approach the intersection of Highway 31 get in the middle lane. Stay on Valleydale Road and cross over Highway 31. For whatever reason this road changes names and becomes Highway 261. After crossing Highway 31, turn right at the first red light. This is Shelby Co. Rd. 275 North (also known as Old 31). Stay on Shelby Co. Rd. 275 until you come to the first traffic light. Turn left onto Riverchase Parkway. Go to a 3-way stop intersection. Turn left onto Yellowood Lane. Go one block and turn right onto Willow Oak Drive. Willow Oak Drive dead-ends into RMS parking lot. Have a safe trip.

PS Willow Oak Drive does intersect Shelby Co. Rd. 275, but it is hard to see after dark. Willow Oak Drive will be a left turn just past the rental business and Riverchase Community Church which is on the right.

Directions to playing sites:

Bragg Middle: Take RIGHT out of RMS, then LEFT on Hwy 79.

Turn RIGHT on Carson Rd. After passing Fultondale High on the left,

Turn RIGHT at the light at the bottom of the hill (Phillips 66 on right).

Cross over Decatur Hwy (Hwy 31).

Turn RIGHT at stop sign onto Main Street. Turn LEFT behind Gardendale

High School about ½ mile up. Bragg is about ½ mile more on the LEFT.

McAdory: Take LEFT out of RMS and RIGHT onto Hwy 75. Turn LEFT onto

Centerpoint Pkwy then LEFT again at the Shell station onto Sweeny Hollow Rd.

Continue past Milo’s and Chik-fil-a (You must not stop for a cheeseburger or crisscross fries.)

Turn RIGHT onto I-59 and merge from the left onto I-459 South.

Continue past Hoover (about 15 miles) on I-459. Take Exit #1 and turn LEFT at the

end of the ramp. After crossing the interstate, you’ll see McAdory on the RIGHT. Go through the light and take the back entrance into the school and follow around with the football field on the left. The gym will be on your RIGHT.

Homewood Middle: Take RIGHT out of RMS, then LEFT onto Hwy 79. Continue onto

Tallapoosa Street about 9 miles. Take the ramp onto I-20 West/ I-59 South.

Take exit 126A to merge onto Elton B Stephens Expy/ US-280E/ US-31 S. Continue to follow US-31 South ( about 4 miles)

Turn RIGHT at Oxmoor Rd ( I think TCBY is on the corner) (1.5 miles)

Turn RIGHT at Mecca Ave (0.3 miles)

Turn RIGHT at Frisco Street (92 ft)

Bottenfield Middle: Turn onto Hwy 79 towards Tarrant.

Turn RIGHT onto Carson Road and follow through Fultondale.

Turn LEFT onto Hwy 31 and merge with I-65 South.

Take the 41st Street Exit bearing to the RIGHT off the ramp.

Continue in LEFT lane as the right becomes a turn only.

Turn RIGHT onto Hwy 78 and follow about 3.2 miles.

Turn RIGHT toward Minor High School bearing RIGHT off the ramp ( 2 quick lights)

Go 0.8 miles and turn LEFT into Bottenfield Middle.

When returning down Hwy 78, you will take the first RIGHT after Arby’s and follow around the horseshoe about a mile. Take LEFT at the first big road and this will carry you under Hwy 78.

Take a RIGHT at the stop sign and this will put you back on 41st Street. Go under overpass and LEFT back onto I-65.

Trussville Middle: Pretend you’re going to McAdory, but don’t turn onto I-59 South; instead, go across the interstate and head through Trussville’s historic Mall area with the soccer/practice fields. (Over the hill past McDonald’s and about 2 red lights) Make a LEFT onto second Mall Street. The school is straight ahead across a 4-lane street, and the gym is at the right side of the campus.

Irondale Middle: Once again, pretend you’re heading to McAdory on I-459, but take the I-20 West Exit going toward Birmingham. Stay in the far right-hand lane and take the first exit once you get onto I-20 (the Old Leeds Road Exit # 135). At the top of the exit ramp, turn LEFT and cross over the interstate. Shortly, turn RIGHT at the dead end onto Old Leeds Road. You will see the school less than ¼ mile on the RIGHT. (about 30 minutes)

Briarwood (South Campus): Same as Irondale….Continue past I-20, Grants Mill Road, and Liberty Parkway.

Take the Hwy 280 exit merging LEFT at the fork ( stay away from the Summit!) This will be a hairpin ramp where you’ll need to merge to the Right-hand lane and onto Hwy 280 East. Continue about 4 miles and turn RIGHT onto Hwy 119 South (about 3 more miles), then

Turn LEFT onto Briarwood Christian Campus (approx 3rd entrance as Middle School Gym is at the far right-hand corner of campus.

Happy driving, and remember that I need a copy of driver’s license and insurance card if you’re going to transport any students other than your own child.

Thanks,

Mrs. Dawkins
