2008 Season Summaries

Bagging groceries at Winn Dixie was a great experience over the last two days!  The girls did a great job, so much so that the manager as well as the cashiers said that they were wonderful to work with.   We earned $210 and change Friday afternoon and $447 plus change today.  We shouldn't have trouble covering the rest of the bill for the filtered clay, and now we'll focus on the HUGE task of the retaining wall.  I spoke with Woody from Bama Steel at Winn Dixie, and he said that the amount of steel for the job is more than we had expected, but they will still provide the rebar at their cost (a few times more than just $760).  Anyway, we still need donations to cover the cost of the rebar and the concrete-----USA Ready Mix is still getting us the concrete at half price.  Remember that we're eating at Munos at 6:30 Monday night--- Make checks out to Jayna Moore.

Check out the downloaded pic of Abby from the county tournament!

4/15/08   Not a great ending to the season, but definitely an end to school ball and onward to travel/park ball!!!   Play, play, play....it's the only way a program can get better and stronger (physically and mentally!)   We didn't come out quite so strong today against Hayden, but 10 errors later(and a few backwards K's)  and we lost 10-6.  Not too bad, but what could top Saturday!   Don't forget Monday, the 28th  6:30 pm at Munos!!!   Never pass up a chance to say goodbye to a season by filling your stomach and having fellowship with one another!!!   I hope the rest of the school year is wonderful, safe, and filled with memories!!!  Love ya!!! Coach Dawkins

4/12/08  Spectacular!!!!  Proud does not even come close to what I feel for our Lady Indians!!!  They persevered through some TOUGH competition today first defeating Fultondale, then turning around and losing to Hueytown.   THEN back-to-back-to back wins over McAdory, North Jefferson, and Bragg.  We came in 3rd with our final loss to Hueytown around 9:pm (our first game was 8:am).  6 games in one day are enough to ask of any team!   I'm not sure of the outcome with Pleasant Grove and Hueytown, but PG had to be defeated twice in order to lose their 1st place standings( they probably left Fultondale Athletic Complex around midnight!)  No matter what the standings say... I think we have the best group of young ladies (and their fantabulous parents)--- what a wonderful softball family!  Congrats Ladies!

4/7/08  Wow, what a game tonight with Hueytown!!  Our girls did such a great job.  We're still struggling a little with our bats, but our defense is so strong with the likes of Lauren Rovi, who had an outstanding game tonight.  We didn't come out on top, but losing 3-4 in the 8th was a thrilling rollercoaster ride!  This was such an uplifting game after we struggled so much with North Jefferson last week!  The Blue Devils shut us out last Thursday.  We've come a long way, and seem to be taking 3 steps forward and only 1 step back with each game at this point.  Ladies, there's no room for failure when you are giving it your all at every opportunity(no matter what the scoreboard reads!)  Keep fighting through our problems, and we'll all be successful!  Sometimes part of life is losing....it's ok to lose sometimes AS LONG AS YOU DON'T LOSE THE LESSON!!!

3/29/08  We had a GREAT time today with our 6 game round robin tournament against Irondale Middle and Fultondale.  The rain held off---once again proving that prayer works.  Everyone improved throughout the day, which is ultimately the goal of any all day tournament.  All girls were extremely dusty and ready for a good meal, a long shower, and a soft pillow!  Congratulations to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd....Rudd, Fultondale, and Irondale respectively.  Remember our workday tomorrow as we will be playing on the PES field again Thursday if our dugouts aren't ready.

3/2/08 Well... the Blue Devil Bash was a wonderful learning experience for us Friday night as it rained "cats and dogs" and we took a beating from Monrovia---awesome team---they won the tournament.  The next game was against McAdory, who we managed to lead most of the first couple of innings, then some wrong decisions and THEIR bats ended with us losing 3-5.  Saturday was warm and sunny with a great game against North Jefferson---The game was tied when time ran out and we were the visiting team at the plate---Three more outs with not a run in sight( we haven't quite found the holes in the field).  The home team gets up to bat with the bottom of the order as the first two hitters, and we manage to strike out the bunt attempts.  Then came Haley with two attempted slap bunts (pitched low and outside) for 2 outs and 2 strikes.  The excitement was growing, because we knew the International Tie-Breaker would put Meagan Howard on 2nd and Amber Howard followed by Heather Hall at the plate---not to worry, because Haley decided to take her third strike over the Center Field fence!  OUCH!!!

3/7/08  We lost our rhythm in regular season play Tuesday against North Jefferson suffering another loss.  We played much better tonight against a strong Hueytown team.  We kept it tight the first 3 innings, but were losing by 7 at the end of the 4th.    The game was called in the bottom of the 6th inning losing by 10.  We have got to work harder at a few defensive errors as well as review some basic baserunning.  Our first "home" game will actually be on Pinson Elementary field on Tuesday against Bottenfield as our field is not game ready.  We need about 4 inches of dirt removed from our infield so the red clay can be delivered during Spring Break---HELP!!  The rest of the brick will be delivered next week along with the two loads of clay and conditioning top coat.  Anyone wanting to help out with the block, excavation of old dirt, leveling of low areas, or just spreading out 2 dumptrucks of clay---come on down!!

3/11/08   ....Then came Hayden---WONDERFUL game!  Once again, our girls came out hitting, and played good defense.  However, somewhere along the way we tend to lose a mental edge and the mental mistakes creep in(usually when the other team has a girl or two on base).  :-)  We've still come a long way, but it is so disappointing to lose such a close game by one point!  Bottenfield cancelled on us due to lack of players this week.  We started the Trussville tournament last night with a loss to Trussville 4-2, and a WIN over Russell County 8-3.  No games played Saturday as the tournament was cancelled due to the fields being under water.

JEFFERSON COUNTY TOURNAMENT DATE CHANGE:::::   Due to the change in High School State finals, our county has to be moved.... it will now be on the 11th and 12th of April at the Fultondale Sports Complex.

The concrete is poured for the sidewalk and home dugout, which will include at storage closet.  We're ready to block up the visitor dugout as we are finished with blocking the home dugout!!!    We can have the labor done if someone can get the brick donated.  The home dugout has been moved further down the left field line in order to see the field from the pressbox once the concession stand/pressbox/ bathroom/dressing room building is constructed.  Special THANK YOU to the Rudd PTA as they voted to give $1,000 to the softball team--- $850 was spent this week for 700 bricks and 2 tons of sand--THANK YOU also for the great prices from USA Block.  The dirt is here and should be spread out tomorrow(3/22) as we excavated alot of the infield today.   You can also check out the school website to view pictures and statistics of other teams.  Practice schedule is below.....

84 Lumber  has graciously donated to our baseball and softball programs.  So much so, that we should have materials for a new pressbox, concession stand, and storage building for both baseball and softball.   The money for the septic tank and concrete are a bit of a hurdle though.  We have bleachers, but need the wooden boards to bolt for the seats.  Thank you H&R PIPE, because they donated the pipe, cleaner, and glue for the sprinkler system!   UPDATE... The drawings were approved and are awaiting approval from the state level for our pressbox/restroom/dressing room building as well as our retaining wall.  USA Ready Mix is giving us a great deal on the concrete(half price!) for when we begin actual construction of the wall and pressbox.  Time just won't seem to stand still for us with a shortened season, ARMT testing after Spring Break, and rained out games.  All is well, and we are holding to the ultimate goal of having a facility that will be easy to maintain and something for our kids to be proud of.  Stay the course!

We wil be selling blankets with individualized embroidery---or with "Indians" and a spear.   They are maroon, thick, and very WARM!!  We will offer them for $35 and the proceeds will go directly to the field.   We need donations of block and rebar!!  We are selling signs for our resurrected field.  We're ready to sell signs for the fence, so get the word out early before someone else contacts the businesses.  Hey, we're open to most suggestions and offers!!!  You can contact the school at 379-5300.
