Vocabulary Words Chapter 11: Matter and Its Properties

1.) element: the basic building of matter; cannot be separated into parts by
chemical means

2.) atom: the smallest particle of an element that has all the properties of
the element.

3.) proton: positively charged particle in the nucleus of an atom

4.) neutron: particle with no electrical charge in the nucleus of an atom

5.) compound: a substance made up of a combination of 2 or more elements held
together by chemical bonds that cannot be separated by physical means.

6.) volume: the space that an object takes up as expressed in cubic units

7.) density: the mass of a substance divided by its volume

8.) buoyancy: the upward force that a fluid exerts on an object that is less
dense than itself. Buoyancy allows a boat to float on water.

9.) mass: the amount of matter in an object

10.) weight: an object's weight depends on its mass (the amount of matter it
consists of) and the strength of the gravitational pull
