Week of September 5th

This week we will be focusing on the following sounds, spelling patterns, and word types...

1.   long /e/ spelled e, ea, ,and ee

2.  the /oo/ sound spelled oo as in hook and book.

3.  a review of short vowel sounds

4.  the /j/ sound spelled _dge as in bridge and fudge

5.  compound words

 

We will also be discussing common and proper nouns. 

 

Week of September 12th

This week we will be focusing on the following sounds, spelling patterns, and word types...

1.  the /ow/ sound spelled ow and ou_ as in crown and house

2.  words that end in le as in little and castle

3.  contractions

4.  compound words

5.  multisyllable words

6.  short vowels

7.  words that end in mb

8.  short e words that have the spelling ea

We will also be learning about pronouns.

Week of September 19th

This week we will be focusing on the following sounds, spelling patterns, and word types...

1.  words with /sh/

2.  words that end in -ed and -ing and the corresponding rules. For example, when there is a short vowel immediately before the last letter of the root word, the last syllable must be doubled before adding ing or ed...dropping and dropped.

3.  compound words

4.  the /k/ sound spelled k and ck

5.  words with the long /a/ sound spelled a, a_e, ai_, and _ay...the blank constitutes a consonant

We will also be learning about action verbs. I teach the students the "verb test":  place  ing and/or ed after the word and, if it makes sense, it's a verb. This doesn't always work, but it helps. ;)

Week of September 26th

This week we will be focusing on the following sounds, spelling patterns, and word types...

1.  long /e/ spelled e, ea, ee, _y, _ie_, and e_e

2.  words with ed and ing

3.  consonant blends st and nd

We will also be learning about possessive nouns, i.e. Sara's friends are coming over for dinner. Students often learn about possessive nouns and then proceed to place an apostrophe before every 's' they see...something to look out for. :)

Week of October 3rd

This week we will be focusing on the following sounds, spelling patterns, and word types...

1.  words with r-controlled vowels (ar, er, ir, and ur)

2.  plurals:  story -stories, leaf - leaves, book - books

3.  long /i/ words spelled i, i_e, igh, _y, and _ie

 

We will also be reviewing common nouns, proper nouns, pronouns, action verbs, and possessive nouns.

Week of November 15th

This week we will be focusing on the following sounds, spelling patterns, and word types...

1.   long /e/ spelled ea and ee

2.  long /i/ spelled igh and i_e

3.  multisyllabic words with long vowels like baby, flavor

4.  multisyllabic words with short vowels like planted and answer

5.  words with the schwa sound like alone, agree, and given

 

We will also be discussing commas in cities, states, and dates.

Week of November 29th

This week we will be focusing on the following sounds, spelling patterns, and word types...

1.   words with the /s/ sound spelled ci_ and ce

2.  long /a/ spelled ai_

3.  compound words

4.  multisyllabic words

5.  words with silent consonants like midnight, listen, answer, and know

 

We will also be reviewing the following grammatical concepts:

1.  capital letters and when to use them

2.  commas in a series and in a letter

3.  quotation marks in dialogue

4.  underlining of titles of books and movies

5.  quotation marks in titles of stories, poems, and chapter titles
