Student Teacher and Other News...

Hi Parents,

I hope you are all enjoying the three day weekend as much as I am! I wanted to let you know that starting tomorrow, we will have a student teacher named Natalie Tran joining us for a little over a month. I met with her last week, and she is super excited to become part of the Room 5 Hive! I also wanted to let you know of some upcoming events.

I am planning on starting Math centers every Tuesday at 2:00, beginning on January 24th. Jacob's dad, David, has offered to come in when he's available, and our new student teacher will help as well. We could use at least one more volunteer if at all possible to help us run 3-4 centers. Please email me if you are interested. For those of you who may not feel their math skills are up to par, let me assure you...they are  parent-friendly. :) happy

Also, we have a guest marine biologist joining us on Thursday from 1:50 - 2:50 to do a marine mammal lesson. She is a new parent at the school, and she is coming to all three of the second grade classes. Parents are welcome to join us.

Friday, January 27th is a professional development day for teachers, so the students have the day off. Please plan accordingly. On Friday, February 3rd, the Marine Mammal Center "Whale Bus" will be here for an interactive, hands-on marine mammals workshop for all of the second graders in the MPR. Again, parents are welcome to come join in, and I would love to have a parent take photos during the event.

Marine Mammal Night is on Tuesday, February 7th from 6:00 - 7:30. Please have your students bring their marine mammal projects in to the classroom that morning. The students will be presenting their projects to the class and then bringing them over to the MPR in the afternoon.

The J.M Book Fair will be open mornings before school and after school the week of Marine Mammal Night, and we could use a few volunteers to join us during our regular library time that week...Tuesday at 11:00. Please let me know if you are available. Book Fair Night is the same night as Marine Mammal Night.

Lastly, on February 10th, we have a field trip to the Jr. Center of Art and Science for an African American Inventors Workshop, followed by a picnic at a nearby playground. The room parents will be contacting the class as well to organize drivers/chaperones for this field trip.

Last but not least, I really need photos for our yearbook page!!! If you have photos that you think would be a great addition to our page, bring them in on a flash drive to the computer lab, and Mrs. Moore will help you upload them to the correct computer.

Thanks and take care,

Sara

It's November already??!!

Hi Parents,

I hope this web update finds you all well! We've been super busy in "the hive"...

First, the kids are getting super excited about the upcoming feast on Thursday, November 5th! There have been multiple emails and documents that have come home recently, including a permission slip for the big day. If you have any lingering questions about the feast, especially those of you who are new to the school, please don't hesitate to contact me. The kids have been having rehearsals and many of them have memorized their speeches!!

Next, the kids are working on subtraction with regrouping (otherwise known as "borrowing"). I've noticed that the kids really need to practice their basic subtraction facts. I recommend flashcards, IXL.com, and mathplayground.com, a site which has tons of private and public games with a time component. If you'd like to use online flashcards, check out http://www.quizlet.com .

Third, the student council had the fantastic idea of having a Box Tops competition, the winner of which will receive a pizza party for their classroom! Saniya already turned in a bag of Box Tops before she even knew about the competition! If you don't know what box tops are, look on your boxes of cereal, granola bars, etc. and cut out the little square marked "Box Tops for Education", and send them in with your kiddos!

Lastly, if your child hasn't yet written his/her "dream" for the dream catcher activity, please make sure it comes in by next Tuesday when we go to the computer lab.

Thanks and take care,

Sara

Welcome to the Room 5 Hive website!

Hi Parents and Students!   I hope you'll bookmark this page to keep up-to-date with the goings-on in the Room 5 Hive. I'll do my best to send out a group email notifying you of any updates I make to the website as the school year progresses.

Homework Suggestions...

Hi Parents!

I know the homework can be overwhelming and frustrating to some students in the beginning of the year, so I wanted to give you some suggestions for making it go more smoothly.

1) Don't do it all on one night. Spread the assignments out over the week.

2) For the writing homework, I tell the kids they only need to have four or five sentences in the beginning weeks/months of school. I would like them to write more than that, but I also don't want them to dread the writing portion of their homework!

3)  Help them plan their writing before they do their drafts. www.superteacherworksheets.com  and www.enchantedlearning.com have great writing organizers (also called graphic organizers) to help you do this.

4)  If your child's homework is taking more than 30 minutes a night, please let me know!! They should be having fun with their family and friends for the majority of their evenings. :)

5) If getting your child to write or do math is like pulling teeth, please email me to set up a conference which you and your child can attend.

Hope this helps!

Sara
