This syllabus is subject to change.
Description
In this English course, students will focus their efforts on learning and using proper grammar. This will include parts of speech, parts of sentences and correct use of punctuation. We will write short essays and paragraphs and edit them for their grammar.
Grading
Writings/exercises - 35%
Class work - 35%
Participation - 30%
The bulk of our work will be done in class. We will work on different sentence structures and figure out how to recognize them, which will determine what kinds of punctuation to use. Then we will try to put into practice what we have learned. We will write short and long answer responses to questions as well as short essays. We will edit them carefully, and discuss whether or not to change punctuation, and why. By the end of the course, students should not only be writing with correct grammar and punctuation, but also know why they are correct.
Homework will not be assigned daily, but when it is, it will be the focus point of our discussions when it is due. Therefore, completing homework is critical to a student’s participation in class that day.
Organization
We will not be distributing a textbook for this course. Students will receive many packets and handouts that need to be available in class. Please find a way of staying organized, whether it is a separate folder or a separate binder to hold your work. Inability to find your work, or wasting class time finding it will affect your participation grade.
