SCP Geometry Syllabi

SCP GEOMETRY

Fall 2008

In this course, you will study such topics as polygons, similarity, congruence, special right triangles, right angle trigonometry, circles, and how to construct formal proofs as applied to geometric concepts.  As a result you will build a foundation of knowledge to be used in future courses, develop deductive and inductive reasoning skills that may be applied to non-mathematical courses and to everyday situations which require logical thinking.  Time in this class will be spent reviewing the CAPT exam that will be administered in the spring.  Materials will be distributed and techniques for answering questions will be discussed.  The following will inform you of course requirements and policies.  Please read this carefully and keep it for future reference.  It will help to make your experience with this course a positive one.

I.  COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Homework:  There will be regular homework assignments that will be due the class after they are assigned.  If you are absent it is your responsibility to find out what you’ve missed and to make up the work within two class periods.  Remember that I will not remind you, so keep track of what is due and when.

Quizzes/Tests:  Generally, three to four unit sections will be included in each quiz.  Tests will generally be given at the conclusion of each unit.  If you miss a quiz or test because of illness, athletics, etc., you must make it up the next class or receive a zero.  In the case of an extended illness, we will work out a schedule for you makeup(s).

Notebook:  For taking class notes and completing homework assignments you can use any kind of notebook you want, but you  should maintain a three-ring, loose-leaf binder divided into sections for quizzes, tests, projects, and CAPT materials.

Projects:  There will be various projects assigned throughout the semester.  Some will be done individually and some will be done in small groups.  A separate handout will provide the details of each.

CAPT Materials & Exercises: Each week you will be receiving materials and work for the CAPT exam.  These should be completed and kept for future use on the CAPT exam.

Participation:  You should be an active participant in your learning.  This is especially true in the study of mathematics.  Consequently, you are expected to contribute to classroom discussions and activities and to remain engaged in the learning process at all times.

II.  GRADING POLICY

Grading is performed on a point basis.  This means that each homework assignment, quiz, test, project, and journal entry will be assigned a certain number of points that you can earn.  Homework is worth 15% of your grade and everything else, 85%.  Each marking period’s grade will be calculated by dividing the number of points you have earned by the total number of possible points and then multiplying by the respective percentage.  The number of possible points you can earn for each grading instrument is show below.

            Homework………………………..Completely done = 3 points.

                                                                   75-95 % complete = 2 points.

                                                                   45-74 % complete = 1 point

                                                                   0-44 % complete = 0 points.

            Quizzes…………………………...10 – 74 points

            Tests……………………………...75 – 125 points

            Projects…………………………...50 – 100 points

            CAPT material & work..…………..0-5 points

ACP Algebra 2 Syllabi

ACP ALGEBRA II

Fall 2008

In this course, you will study such topics as the real number system, relations and functions, discrete mathematics, probability and statistics.  As a result you will build a foundation of knowledge to be used in future courses, foster the ability to recognize equivalent representations of the same problem and analyze a problem from multiple perspectives, model data and real-world phenomena with a variety of functions, and effectively communicate mathematical concepts, solutions, and ideas.  The following will inform you of course requirements and policies.  Please read this carefully and keep it for future reference.  It will help to make your experience with this course a positive one.

IV.  COURSE SUGGESTIONS

Get to know your classmates and form a small study group.  Sometimes working together on problems makes the work more enjoyable and leads to a better understanding.  Always ask questions when you are unsure of a concept under study.  Read your math book to gain further insight into the topics being examined.  Finally, realize that you will succeed in mathematics if you consistently work at developing your reasoning skills.

I hope you find this course to be both interesting and challenging.  I look forward to working with you to make this a rewarding and productive school year!
