I. COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Homework: There will be regular homework assignments that will be due the class after they are assigned. If you are absent it is your responsibility to find out what you’ve missed and to make up the work within two class periods. Remember that I will not remind you, so keep track of what is due and when. All homework will be posted on the class website.
Quizzes/Tests: Generally, three to four unit sections will be included in each quiz. Tests will generally be given at the conclusion of each unit. If you miss a quiz or test because of illness, athletics, etc., you must make it up the next class or receive a zero. In the case of an extended illness, we will work out a schedule for you makeup(s).
Notebook: You should maintain a three-ring, loose-leaf binder divided into sections for assignments, class notes, homework, quizzes and tests, projects and handouts.
Participation: You should be an active participant in your learning. This is especially true in the study of mathematics. Consequently, you are expected to contribute to classroom discussions and activities and to remain engaged in the learning process at all times.
II. GRADING POLICY
Grading is performed on a point basis. This means that each homework assignment, quiz, test, project, and journal entry will be assigned a certain number of points that you can earn. Homework is worth 25% of your grade and everything else, 75%. Each marking period’s grade will be calculated by dividing the number of points you have earned by the total number of possible points and then multiplying by the respective percentage. The number of possible points you can earn for each grading instrument is show below.
Homework…………….........Completely done = 3 points.
75-95 % complete = 2 points.
45-74 % complete = 1 point
0-44 % complete = 0 points.
Quizzes…………….10 – 74 points
Tests……………….75 – 125 points
III. EXTRA HELP
I am available for extra help after school on an appointment basis. Please take advantage of this option if the need arises.
IV. COURSE SUGGESTIONS
Get to know your classmates and form a small study group. Sometimes working together on problems makes the work more enjoyable and leads to a better understanding. Always ask questions when you are unsure of a concept under study. Read your math book to gain further insight into the topics being examined. Finally, realize that you will succeed in mathematics if you consistently work at developing your reasoning skills.
I hope you find this course to be both interesting and challenging. I look forward to working with you to make this a rewarding and productive school year!
