Orchestra Vocabulary, Do You Know the Right Stuff

These are the orchestra vocabulary words we have used or are using in our study of and performing of orchestral music at the 5th/8th grade level. You should know the word, the correct spelling, the definition and be able to demonstrate it on your instrument! Whew! I already know you can do this. We do much of it every day! See what you know. Beat ___ The pulse of the music.  
Quarter Note ___ Equals one beat of sound in 4/4 time.  
Quarter Rest ___ Equals one beat of silence in 4/4 time.  
Staff ___ Has 5 lines and 4 spaces on which we write notes.  
Bar Lines ___ Vertical lines which divide the staff into measures.
Measures ___ Sections of the staff divided by bar lines.  
Treble Clef ___ Indicates a set of note names for violin.  
Alto Clef ___ Indicates a set of note names for viola.  
Bass Clef ___ Indicates a set of note names for cello or string bass.
Time Signature ___ Tells us how many beats are in a measure and what 
    kind of note gets one beat.  
Double Bar ___ A vertical skinny line and fat line indicates the end of 
    piece of music.  
Four Strings ___ The number of strings on the violin, viola, cello or bass.
Bow ___ A stick with horse hair, a frog and a tip we use to play
    music notes.  
Sharp ___ Raises the pitch of a note.  
Dynamics ___ The volume of music.  
Crescendo ___ Gradually get louder.  
Decrescendo ___ Gradually get softer.  
Scale ___ A series of notes in ascending or descending order.
Down Bow ___ Move the bow to the right. Symbol looks like a table.
Up Bow ___ Move the bow to the left. Symbol looks like a "V".  
Eighth Note ___ Equals 1/2 beat of sound.  
Repeat Sign ___ Two dots surrounding the middle line means go back 
    and play the section again.  
Half Rest ___ Sits on the middle line and gets two beats of silence.
Chord ___ Two or more notes played at the same time.  
Key Signature ___ Tells us what notes to play with sharps or flats.  
Dotted Half Note ___ Gets three beats of sound.  
Tie ___ A curved line that connects notes of the SAME pitch.
Slur ___ A curved line that connects notes of DIFFERENT pitches.
Tempo ___ The speed of music.  
Allegro ___ A fast tempo  
Moderato ___ A medium tempo  
Andante ___ A slow walking tempo  
Ledger Lines ___ Lines that extend the staff above or below to add more 
    notes.  
Upbeat ___ A note or notes that appear before the first full measure.
Fine ___ The end  
D.C. al Fine ___ Go back to the beginning and play to the fine.  
Natural ___ Cancels a sharp or a flat.  
Half Step ___ The smallest distance between two notes.  
Whole Step ___ Two half steps.  
Whole Note ___ Gets four beats of sound in 4/4 time.  
Whole Rest ___ Gets four beats of silence in 4/4 time.  
Staccato ___ Play with a stopped bow stroke. Notes are marked with a 
  ___ dot above or below.  
Hooked Bowing ___ Two or more staccato notes played in the same direction. 
Forte ___ Loud dynamic.  
Piano ___ Soft dynamic.  
Tuner Box ___ Plays the note "A" to which we tune the instruments.
Accidental ___ A note altered by a flat, sharp or natural sign that is not 
  ___ part of the key signature.  
Ritardando (rit.) ___ Gradually slow down.  
Rallentando (rall.) ___ Gradually slow down.  
Accelerando ___ Gradually speed up.  
Simili (sim.) ___ Play the same as.  
Diminuendo (dim.) ___ Gradually get softer.
