Rost's Reading Regimen

I basically teach from two reading programs.  The first program is the District Trophies program, sometimes in the regular classroom, and sometimes in a small group in another classroom.  We do the same grade level vocabulary, stories and skills that the other groups do, but I read most of the stories to the students, and work on comprehension skills more as listening comprehension. We also practice the same literary, phonics and English lessons that accompany each story.

The other program I use is the SLANT program, Structured Language Training Program.  SLANT is a very structured, phonics-based program, which also includes sight words, language rules, reading, reading comprehension, spelling and writing skills. SLANT is very beneficial for struggling readers because it includes lots of repetition and stories that only use phonics and sight words that have been taught in the program.  There are no words or names in a story that can't be sounded out, or have not been taught as sight words.  This allows students to become fluent, or smooth, readers at very low levels.

I supplement my reading programs with a specialized spelling program, as well as weekly sight words from the Basic Dolch Words List, used as part of the regular curriculum.

The week of March 22nd, we will be using the theme of "Careers", throughout our reading lessons.  This will support and supplement information learned at Career Night, at 6:00 P.M., on Monday, March 22nd.

The students are taught in the regular classroom, as a whole class, the subjects of English, Writing, Social Studies, Science and Health, with some adaptations and modifications.  When I am not in the regular classroom, or teaching small groups in a grade level, my assistant is in the class to assist  the regular classroom teacher with adaptations and modifications for students with special needs.
