Community Read Aloud
We were spotted in the news again for our Community Read Aloud celebration. Students used our flip cams to interview community members including the mayor for this year's documentary "Polk County's Treasure, Technology Changes Our World". Kathleen Elementary School celebrates their annual Community Read Aloud Day with over thirty readers representing various organizations throughout central Florida including the Superintendent of Polk County Schools, Learning Resource Center, Girls Inc., Mimi’s Café, Polk County Public Schools, Plant City Police Department, YMCA, Publix, Florida Southern Men’s Basketball Team, and Epilepsy Services of Tampa. Interviews were conducted throughout the day by the students using our Flip Cams to create a documentary on the importance of reading. Every other week interviews are aired on our morning show the Cougar News Network. Student book reviews are on the morning show on alternate Fridays. Watch our reading documentary...

Shining Star
We received a Gold Star for the first time and are proud that 100% of our teachers are technology proficient. We recently received another $5,000 grant and a Silver Star award for our technology efforts and are in the process of purchasing airliners to go with our smartboards in our classrooms. In 2008 KES has received $5,000 for additional technology to support classroom websites our itv program "Cougar News Network".
School to School Developer Award
In addition to the Shining Star our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grader teachers wrote a Developer grant entitled "We Like to Move It" to purchase wireless mice for the classrooms. Congratulations to Mrs. Borden for her Developer Award this year for Extending Thinking strategies.

We were inspired by the students at the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, GA who performed their song for us.
Polk Education Foundation (PEF) Matching Grant
Thanks to our PTO and PEF this grant was used to purchase four audio systems for classrooms. These systems include ceiling mounted speakers and microphones for the teachers as well as students to use. In addition our PTO purchased an additional audio system for our cafeteria and projection machine!
