Chatter Peeps
Speaking of Speech and Language
Hello! Welcome to the Speech and Language Program, where we are All busy improving our Abilities to Communicate with others. We are the “Original Chatter Peeps” (people earnestly & ecstatically producing sounds).
Research indicates that a child’s ability to communicate is central to the learning process. Additionally, studies show that a child’s inadequate speaking and listening skills results in failure to him/her relative to receiving as much as he/she might have achieved from the total school experience. In light of this research, the Speech and Language Program is a part of the student personnel services provided by the school district.
Currently, the Speech and Language work emphasizes the elicitation of the basic and complex sentence constructs, review of classification/categorization tasks, phonemic awareness exercises, phonetic/phonemic drills on target levels, exercises combining the 4(four) Learning Styles of Auditory, Visual, Tactile and Kinesthetic to habitualize correct speech patterns and language concepts at appropriate levels, and activities to improve listening skills, formulating questions and vocabulary building.
In addition, goals focus on Carry-over (the student’s ability to transfer and maintain good sounds and/or language patterns in other environments and situations apart from the speech classroom),Take Home Assignments that require reading from picture storybooks, magazines, charts, posters, remediation programs, newspapers and the recitation of short poems, verses and rhymes
