Course description: The focus of the school year will be on concept development, skill development, critical thinking and problem solving. The curriculum will integrate the major strands of algebra, geometry, statistics, and mathematical reasoning. Students will work on the following skills: order of operations, variables and expressions, properties, the distributive property, variables and equations, ordered pairs, solving equations using inverse operations, inequalities, statistics, integers and absolute value, the coordinate system, comparing and ordering integers, adding/subtracting/multiplying/dividing integers, solving equations by adding/subtracting/dividing/multiplying, using formula's, area/perimeter, solving inequalities by adding/subtracting/multiplying/dividing, factors, powers and exponents. At the end of each section, students will be given a test. After the second and fourth quarter a midterm and final will be administered, respectively.
Supplies: inexpensive calculator (less than $15.), notebook, and loose leaf.
Focus Skills: Working independently; persisting to achieve quality; solves problems
Course Requirements/Grading System Possible
Homework Assignments 35
Quizzes and Tests 50
Class Participation and Collaboration 15
TOTAL 100
Universal Classroom Rules:
Students must arrive for class on time
Students must come to class prepared
Students must sit in an appropriate manner for the class
Students may not behave in a manner that is distracting to others
Students must ask permission, at an appropriate time, in order to leave a classroom
Students who miss a day, for whatever reason, need to check about missed work with the teacher, or with a fellow student, before returning to class
Objectives:
Students will learn to manipulate numbers and equations correctly
Students will learn to decode word problems
Text: Pre-Algebra, Glencoe
Homework: Homework will be assigned every Monday through Thursday night. At the last part of class, students will be given the opportunity to begin their homework. Homework assigned is based on what is taught in class that day. Students get full credit for homework if they did all the problems assigned, half credit if half is done and a zero if less than half of the work is done.
Absences/Late Work: If a student is absent, they are responsible for what they missed. Student who is absent should e-mail me or call one of their peers for the assignment. An explanation of each lesson is in the textbook. If a student is absent for a test, they will need to take it the day they return.
Notebook: Notebook checks will be done intermittently. Their grade will be reflected in their class participation.
