What is Lit Plus class?
Literature Plus class helps kids learn techniques, skills, and strategies to improve their reading comprehension, how much they understand when they read, and fluency, how smoothly they read both aloud and "in their heads." We also work on building our vocabularies and practice test-taking strategies. Though the class is only one quarter, students can continue practicing what we have learned to keep building their strength as readers. Much of what we do teaches students how to THINK, because to be good reader, one must be a good thinker! Here is a sample of the material we cover in the class:
- types and characteristics of genres (poetry, nonfiction, drama, etc.)
- literary elements (alliteration, metaphor, setting, etc.)
- classifying or categorizing information (main ideas and supporting details)
- identifying relationships of ideas (cause and effect, sequence, etc.)
- "before, during, and after reading" strategies
- text marking and marginal notes
- high frequency sight words
- a variety of weekly fluency passages
- using graphic organizers to record information
