What can parents and kids do?

To promote literacy in your home, here are some simple things you can do:
  • Get library cards and go to the Berwyn Public library where you can check out books and magazines for both adults and children.  They even have some books on tape and in Spanish!
  • Subscribe to daily newspapers and magazines.  Talk about the articles you have read, and even read aloud to each other.
  • Parents can read aloud to their children and children can read to their parents, grandparents, and younger siblings or cousins.  If a three-year-old wants to hear the same book again and again, that's okay!  Reading stories aloud benefits both the reader and the listener.  When reading aloud, make predictions, discuss difficult words, and use an expressive voice.
  • Play word games at home.  Games like Scrabble and Boggle make words fun and build vocabulary. Crossword puzzles are excellent choices for too!
  • Limit the time you spend watching television, playing video games, and talking on the phone.  Use your computer to learn new things about the world around you.
  • Go to museums, plays, parks, zoos, and places of historic interest to help build a knowledge bank.  A wide variety of experiences helps readers to understand more of what they read.
