Signs of a voice disoder
A voice disorder might be suspected if the individual speaks at
an inappropriate pitch (too high or low, or monotonous). Other voice
disorders might result in voice breaks, a harsh sound, horseness,
breathiness or nasality. Frequent or chronic laryngitis might also
suggest a voice disorder.
Treatment of voice disorders
Voice disorders can occur due to a variety of causes. Vocal problems
might be caused by medical problems (e.g. infection or papilloma
growth) as well as by improper use of the voice (e.g. yelling oneself
hoarse). Both medical and behavioral therapies can help with a voice
disorder but complete evaluation is an essential first step.
