Kindergarten:

By the end of Kindergarten students should be able to:

      1.  recognize library and book terms, such as  title, author, illustrator, cover, spine, and pages.

      2.  recognize ABC order.

      3.  select and check out books on an appropriate level.

      4.  identify good library citizenship including the proper use and treatment of library materials.

      5.  identify story elements such as characters, setting, beginning, middle, end, and make predictions about a story.

      6.  listen and respond to various types of literature such as nursery rhymes, fairy tales, poetry, make believe and factual material.

 

  

 

1st Grade

By the end of first grade students should be able to:

      1.  identify parts of a book such as title page, table of contents, and index.

      2.  apply knowledge of alphabetical order to locate books in appropriate sections and use checkout procedures.

      3.  describe story elements such as setting, plot, characters, and theme.

      4.  identify various genre of literature such as folklore, fairy tales, poetry, fiction and nonfiction.

      5.  select favorite authors and topics of personal interest. 

2nd Grade

By the end of second grade students should be able to:

      1.  identify and use parts of a book such as title page, table of contents, glossary, and index.

      2.  alphabetize to the second letter and use simple guide words in a dictionary.

      3.  find appropriate fiction and nonfiction materials.

      4.  recognize the book catalog and its use to locate books.

      5.  demonstrate good library citizenship including rules of behavior and proper use and treatment of library materials.

      6.  apply story elements such as setting, plot, characters and theme, and make predictions and interpret meaning from literature.

      7.  state why an author or topic is of personal interest.

      8.  classify a variety of classic and contemporary literature from different genres such as folklore, fairy tales, tall tales, legends, poetry, fiction and nonfiction.

      9.  recognize author's purpose for writing stories.

      10.  choose and read a variety of literature including award-winning selections such Caldecott Medal winners.

3rd Grade

By the end of third grade students should be able to:

      1.  use and explain organizational features of printed text, such as title page, table of contents, glossary and index.

      2.  select appropriate resources to locate different types of information, such as dictionary, encyclopedia, atlas, almanac, and internet.

      3.  demonstrate dictionary skills, such as guide words, alphabetical order to the second and third letter, word meaning, pronunciation key and syllabication.

      4.  identify the components of a bibliographic record, such as call number, author, title, publisher, copyright date, and number of pages.

      5.  use the book catalog to locate books by author, subject, and title.

      6.  recognize and use features of the Dewey Decimal System to locate materials.

      7.  locate, choose and read a variety of classic and comtemporary literature from appropriate genres, such as fiction, nonfiction, biography, folk tales, fairy tales, and legends.

      8.  recognize that information found in the library can be used to make decisions or satisfy personal interest.

  

4th Grade

By the end of Fourth Grade students should be able to:

      1.  demonstrate organizational features of printed text, such as title page, table of contents, glossary, and index.

      2.  select and access appropriate library resources to locate different types of information.

      3.  apply dictionary skills.

      4.  explain the components of a bibliographic record, such as call number, author, title, publisher, copyright date, number of pages.

      5.  use the book catalogs to locate books by author, title and subject.

      6.  use the Dewey Decimal System to locate material.

      7.  recommend an author or topic of personal interest.

      8.  compare, contrast and read a variety of classic and contemporary literature from appropriate genres, such as fiction, nonfiction, poetry, tall tales, biography, folktales, fairy tales, and legends.

      9.  read, compare and contrast award-winning selections.
