Goals for Fifth Grade

By the time a student gets to fifth grade they have been using the library enough to know the basics.  Basic library skills are reviewed, but emphasis is placed on independent learning.  In fifth grade students read for information and understanding, as well as recreational reading.  Effort is made to integrate library instruction with content taught in the classroom.  Students are exposed to a variety of literary genres, based on classroom assignments for the 'Book-It' program.  The main focus of the fifth grade program is to help students build a foundation for life-long learning, to foster the love of reading, and to engage them in learning the skills they need to gather and use information effectively.
