This Month in Room 34
In November, the children will be learning to read and spell words with digraphs (sh, th), short u, and L blends. In reading, we will continue to summarize, retell, and identify the main idea and details. The students will also learn to visualize as a retelling and sequencing strategy. In grammar, we will continue to identify different types of nouns, including plural and proper nouns. Writer's Workshop topics: Turkeys, Pilgrim Life, and being thankful.
**We have first grade pen pals. The children were excited to get their first letters from students in Long Valley's Kossman School. We enjoyed writing back to them, and we are hoping to receive new letters this month. The children brought home copies of their special letters.
November topics: Elections and voting, community helpers, Pilgrims and Native Americans, and the First Thanksgiving.
We are completing our chapter on addition and subtraction using manipulatives and pictures. This month, the children will be learning addition strategies, such as counting on, using a number line, and using doubles facts. We will continue to solve problems in our math journals by drawing pictures, using numbers, and using our words to explain how we solved. We will then be ready to start learning subtraction strategies.
We will be completing our unit on the five senses. Students will be participating in a special science lab during American Education Week. Parents will be invited to help the children during this lab, and we will be using our eyes to view magnified objects.
