Every Joaquin Miller student is scheduled for 45-60 minutes of computer lab each week. Projects and programs align with curriculum standards and are customized to reinforce classroom assignments.

Fourth grade students in Mrs. Sudduth's class participated in a yearlong penpal project with Chabot Elementary students. Starting in November they wrote letters using a word processing program, created digital valentines using an online mash-up tool and communicated for the last few months via email. The project concluded with penpals meeting each other in Montclair Park.
Third Grade Rancho Voices
Third grade students prepare multimedia presentations about life during the Rancho period in the 1800's. In class they study early California history, read The Valley of the Moon, the diary of 13-year-old Maria, a Mestizo servant of a wealthy Spanish family, and participate in living history day. Listen to this Voicethread, created and narrated by students in Ms. Scott's class, to hear and read about a day in the life of people who lived during Rancho times.
Fall Projects
Kindergarten students are learning to draw on the computer using KidPix Deluxe 3x. They created jack-o-lanterns and had fun working on cartoon turkeys and abstract line art. Our final project for the fall was a coloring book by all the K's celebrating the cultural diversity represented by December lights.
First Grade students completed personalized calendars in KidPix Deluxe 3X. Ms. Jue-Leong's class drew from life. Mrs. Milliken and Mrs. McQueen's students created a template to color in and represent the seasonal changes. Now we're practicing our math facts!
Second Grade students are using KidPix Deluxe 3x and all created Dreamcatcher slideshows. Look and listen to Ms. Treese's class slide show at the top of the page by clicking on the arrow. Ms. Williams' and Mrs. Green's classes also explored the Plimoth Plantation website and Ben's Guide to the U.S. government.
Third Gradestudents are learning to touch-type using Type to Learn 3 and publish by importing their KidPix3x illustrations into Pages documents. Ms. Scott's class learned to use GoogleDocs to refine and edit their writing. All third graders are researching and illustrating City Animal reports.
Fourth Gradestudents are refining their touch-typing with Ultra-Keys. Each class also produced a group slide-show with illustrated Halloween riddles. Check them out!
Mrs. Sudduth's and Mrs. Ulrich's class are working on Native American presentations in Hyperstudio 5.
Fifth Gradestudents are using Pages to learn how to draw using vector graphics. They created trading cards using an online mashup tool to combine jpeg images and writing. Ms. Ohanis' class worked on explorer trading cards and Ms. Moran's class created native grass labels for our native plant sale at the holiday bazaar. They also published planet travel brochures in Pages with alien tour guides!
