How to Be Successful in Math

Attend Class: There is only one way to find out what goes on in class and that is to be there. You will never learn as much from make-up work as you do in class, so choose to be there.

Read the book, your notes, and work problems everyday: The key to success in math is working problems. Remember: learn is a verb, you have to do it.

Do it on your own: Don’t be misled into thinking someone else’s work is your own. Getting answers from someone and getting help from someone is not the same thing.

Don’t expect to understand a topic the first time you see it: Sometimes you will understand everything you are doing, and sometimes you won’t. If you are confused just keep trying. You certainly won’t understand if you close your book and give up!

Spend whatever time it takes to master the subject: There is no formula for the amount of time necessary to learn what you need to know. That depends on you.

The only difference between an “A” and a “D” is the amount of effort you put into it:An “A” student is not necessarily an “A” student because they are smart, An “A” student is willing to put in the time and effort to learn.

Ask questions when you don’t understand: After listening in class and working problems, if there are still questions in your mind about a concept, ask questions.

Relax: Millions of students have been in this class and millions more will be. It’s not as difficult as you may think, but it does take effort on your part.
