It's a brand new school year.
Welcome back to Heritage! If you are reading this then you are a Seventh Grade student or parent. I look forward to teaching your student how to become a better reader. We will start out the school year with a story by Gary Soto called "Seventh Grade." How appropriate! With this story we will focus on two things: Plot stages and making connections.
You can read the story online if you like by clicking on the "Online Version" of the textbook.
Again, this will be a wonderful year and I can't wait to get started. How about you?
Update 10-8-10
We have been very busy reading all types of short stories. We recently read a non-fiction short story on the sinking of the Titanic. Before that, we read the Langston Hughes short story "Thank You M'am" and before that was a story appropriately titled "Seventh Grade" by the young adult author Gary Soto.
We are currently preparing to read our first novel of the year, Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman. It is a great story about immigrants in a Cleveland neighborhood creating community through a garden. It is one of my favorite books to read in 7th grade since our students are trying to create a new community on our team at Heritage.
Your student should be working on their independent reading books. All work for the quarter that are connected to these books must be turned in by October 25th. The grading period ends on October 29th.
