New Units starting 10-5-09
Hello 8A families,
We are starting a couple of new units in Language Arts. First we are looking at the roots: "helio" and "hydra(o)" with 10 new vocabulary words.
We are also starting a unit on the poems and short stories of Edgar Allan Poe. The students just finished a short biography on Mr. Poe and learned a summarizing strategy called GIST. We will begin with the short story "The Masque of the Red Death". It is written in a play format and we will be working on our fluency as well as looking at the symbolism in this story. Additionally, during this unit we will be working on two figurative language types: hyperbole (exaggeration) and personification (giving non-human objects human qualities.)
Please ask your student about what they have learned in regard to these units.
