PURPOSES OF ART – CEREMONIAL

Artworks created to use in worship ceremonies, rituals and celebrations (ceremonial mask)

 2.4.1

 Native Americans designed their own art before European settlers came to America.  (pottery,  mask, teepees, clothing).

West African culture:  purpose for creating mask for ceremonies, rituals and celebrations.

 

1. Students will identify elements of art and principles of design and BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN how they were used in Native American art.

2. Students will identify and describe mask and how they were used in ceremonies of Native American and West African culture.

  

K

Day 1

Students will identify elements of art lines and shapes and be able to create an artwork using color, lines and shapes in authentic Indian designs, for decorating a teepee.

Day 2

Students will create an original mask and will decorate with lines, shapes and colors used in Native American art.

Students will identify reasons Native Americans used mask, ceremonies (winter curing, medicinal and healing, hunting ceremonies.)

Day 3

Students will listen to a story of Native American culture and draw illustrations of the story, Arrow to the Sun.

Day 4

Students will identify pottery as a 3-D work of art. Students will draw lines and shapes to create designs used in Native American pottery.

Day 5

Students will draw original Native America designs and patterns to create a drawing to be used in creating sand art. Students will recognize that sand art was used in healing ceremonies.

 

1st

Day 1

Day 2

Students will go to computer lab and create designs used in Native American works of art designs.

Day 3

Students will identify reasons for wearing mask and how masks have been a part of all cultures throughout history. Students will begin creating a Native American design paper mache mask.

Day 4

Students will continue next step in creating a paper mache mask let it dry and prepare to decorate the mask.

Day 5

Students will be assessed over concepts taught using CATS like multiple choice questions and an open response question.

 

5th

Day 1
