Terri Albuquerque

Meet Mrs. Albuquerque :)

Hello!  I am Mrs. Albuquerque and I am blessed to be the fifth grade teacher at St. Mary School here in Bethel, CT.  As I begin my fourth year at SMS, I am appreciating how lucky I have been to start my career as a classroom teacher in such a warm and loving, Christ-centered family environment :)

I realized I wanted to be a teacher when I was in high school, working at the daycare center I had actually gone to as a child.  Being around children, talking to them, explaining their little worlds to them, was something that I quickly fell in love with.  So, when it came time to deciding "officially" what I wanted to be when I grew up, applying to Eastern Connecticut State University, where I would eventually attend the teacher training program, was a no brainer!

Finding a teaching job was not easy back in 2009, so I did not immediately begin teaching in a classroom of my own.  However, I knew that I needed to be in a school and would take whatever got me in the door!  I entered the Masters of Arts in Teaching program at Sacred Heart University and interned at an elementary school in Bridgeport, CT.  Then, after graduating from SHU, I spent a year as a paraprofessional working one-on-one with a kindergarten child in an autistic classroom.  The following year I returned to the elementary school in Bridgeport where I was hired as a long-term substitute for the 4th grade class.  Finally, 11 days before the start of the 2013-2014 school year, I sat in the Principal's Office at St. Mary School and interviewed with Sister Anne McCarthy.  It was a long journey to a classroom of my very own, but the experiences I had prior to coming to St. Mary's were God's plan to shape me into the teacher I am today… the teacher He wanted me to be.

I love children and I love that I can be a part of their lives in such an important way.  A big part of my teaching philosophy is to be positive and to have fun in my classroom every day.  This attitude teaches the children that while we all have jobs to do in life, and while we might not always love every minute of all the jobs we have to do, if we keep a positive attitude and we look for ways to have fun... finding joy and being joyful becomes a habit.

A bit about me on a personal level... On July 19th of 2015 I married my wonderful husband Sean.  Part of what makes Mr. Albuquerque so wonderful is that fact that he came with an amazing son, Little Sean!  My stepson, Sean, has been in my life for four years now and he is truly a fantastic kid :)  We have a lot of fun as a family and enjoy going to Yankee games, watching Portugal dominate on the soccer field, and of course we are huge fans of all things TMNT (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)!  We have the matching PJs to prove it :)

Teaching at SMS has not only been a wonderful place to grow as a teacher, but also as a wife and a mother.  The other members of the faculty and staff and the families that send their children here provide a great example of love and commitment to family and to God.  At St. Mary School it is easy to look around and find examples of our core Gospel Values in action happening each day.  Once again, I am truly blessed to not only teach at St. Mary School, but to consider it a second home where I also happen to work :)
