2nd Annual Trivia Night to Benefit MSSC

Madison Student Support Center will be holding a Trivia Night on November 19, 2011.  The goal of the fundraiser is to support the MSSC Incentive Program and raise funds for our students to participate in an overnight outdoor education program offered by Camp Wartburg in Waterloo, Illinois.

Students at MSSC frequently have difficulties staying motivated when it comes to education, and the incentive program provides students with some external encouragement to press on toward the goal of academic achievement.  Some of the incentives that have been offered at MSSC in the past include educational and team building field trips, Wii tournaments, community service opportunities in the surrounding areas, and tangible items like juice, snacks, and other purchased or donated items.  The field trips we have taken as incentives include the Old Courthouse in St. Louis, where we participated in a Mock Trial, a camping trip, the Holocaust Museum in St. Louis, and Great Adventures Indoor Ropes Course, where students learned to take healthy risks and to build trusting relationships with each other and staff.

The Trivia Night will be held at Madison Accelerated Middle School, 1003 Farrish, Madison, Il.   The cost is $80 per table, with a maximum of 8 people per table.  Please feel free to bring your own snacks and drinks.  Because this is a school-sponsored event, no alcohol will be served.  Doors will open at 6:00 pm and trivia will begin at 7:00.  There will be items for raffle and a 50/50 drawing.  The winning table will receive a trophy.

To register, please contact MSSC at 618-798-5112, or email michelle_fenwick@hotmail.com.

MSSC Trivia Night A HUGE Success!

The first annual MSSC Trivia night to benefit the Incentive Program was a booming success!
The event was hosted by the staff of the MSSC and our Master of Ceremonies was Shawn Balint from KTRS.  Shawn donated his time to our cause and did an outstanding job leading us in our program.

We had 10 tables of participants and played 10 rounds of  trivia.  Each category had something to do with education.  Participants were able to bid on a dessert auction at the beginning of the event and silent auction items throughout the night.  Overall, close to $2000 was raised!  We had participants from the Madison CUSD 12 community, the Zion Lutheran School Board of Education, and friends and family from as far away as Boonville, Missouri and Carmi, Illinois!

There were many generous donors for our event.  Some donated school supplies (Michele Kirby, Tim and Cindy Tweedy, Holly McRae, Steve and Karen Burk), some donated cash (Cherne Corp, Dan and JoAnn Vetter, Latricia Pritchard, Judy McGrath), and some donated items for the auction (Celeste Bowman, Rob Lugge, Don Wallace, Chris and Michelle Fenwick, Betsy and Eric Van Keulen, Kraft Foods, Capri Sun, Christy Simmons Brimm, Denise Evitt Nelson, Pop-A-Tot and Stacy Green Ellsworth, David and Nikia Jackson, Early Childhood Staff at Madison CUSD 12, Melissa Stout, "The Stamp Doc", for Stampin Up, and Belva Martin).  We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to our successful event in any way.

Congratulations to the First Place winning table, hosted by Shelly and Mike Rice!  It was a close race to the finish, but they prevailed as the victors and won a custom trophy.  They were generous enough to donate their winnnings ($80 refund of table price) back to the MSSC  and we appreciate their kind gesture.

Please keep us in mind next fall as we continue this new tradition!

First Ever MSSC Trivia Night!

Madison Student Support Center will be holding a Trivia Night on September 25, 2010.  The goal of the fundraiser is to support the MSSC Incentive Program.

The field trips we have taken as incentives include a camping trip, the Holocaust Museum in St. Louis, and Great Adventures Indoor Ropes Course, where students learned to take healthy risks and to build trusting relationships with each other and staff.

The Trivia Night will be education-themed...all categories have something to do with school, education, and teachers and students. To follow through with that theme, Mulligans will be available not for purchase, but in exchange for school supplies.  Many of our students come to school without the basic tools for learning, so we are hoping to collect enough items to provide for those needs.  Some of the items we are hoping to receive are: paper (lined and plain), construction paper, multi packs of pencils and pens, white out, erasers,  notebooks, white dustless chalk, poster boards, calculators, markers, colored pencils, art and craft supplies, post-it notes, glue sticks, tape, 3-ring binders, dry-erase markers, and portable jump/thumb drives.  Each Mulligan will cost one school supply item.

We are currently taking registration for the trivia night.

The fund raiser will be held in Bethalto, Illinois, at the Bethalto Senior Center at 100 East Central Street.  To register, please contact MSSC at 618-798-5112, or email mfenwick@madison.k12.il.us.

Violence Prevention Candle Light Vigil

MSSC hosted a Candle Light Vigil in recognition of Violence Prevention Month.   Many of our students, members of the Madison/Venice community, and staff have been affected by violence either personally or through someone they care for.  Our vigil acknowledges the pain violence causes, but also the hope for something better.  One of our guest speakers, Rev. Juan Conway, stated, "It doesn't matter what happened in the past.  We can't change it.  What we have power over is what happens tomorrow.  This is a place to start."

We would like to thank all the people who came and made our event special.  We'd especially like to thank Rev. Juan Conway, Bishop John Henry Williams, Rev. Willie Gholston, and Mayor John Hamm.  We'd also like to recognize the community members who take a special interest in improving this area and taking a vested interest in our students.  We are always encouraged when people not only take notice, but become actively involved in our mission.
