The continent of Africa was the home of early prehistoric man. over the years, many different people have lived there. Africa has been called the "birthplace" of the human race.

If you look at the Northern part of Africa, you'll see a vast desert,the worlds largest desert called the Sahara desert. The Nile River runs right through the middle of Northern Africa. For thousands of years the Nile River has offered life and strength to the people who live around it.

Western Africa
just like the singing storyteller in ancient Greece, history in western Africa was preserved by the Jeli also known as a griot. Blacksmiths were very important people in western African society. In ancient Ghana, Mali, and Songhay, people who performed brave deeds were given the "Honor of the Trousers".

Eastern Africa
Did you know that sailors in ancient Africa didn't have computers. They also didn't have radars, radios, or any other modern instruments. One of the most important inventions of ancient times was the iron hoe.

Southern Africa
In southern Africa, the cow is the most valuable thing. It is how they get their food and clothes and many other things. In ancient Kongo, in south central Africa, craftspeople produced a cloth. Esikongo people believed they were the happiest and luckiest people on the Earth.

These hardy, gentle, animals are threatened by expanding human populations and market demands.
