A Letter to the Parents

Hello,

My name is Mr. Falla and this website is designed to help you understand what your child is working on in the Math Literacy Labs. Ms. Chretien and I are the math content teachers in the labs. The labs are supported by the special education department, Ms. Alexy and special education chair, Ms. Norton, as well as Mr. Carrion and Ms. Lopez from the ELL staff. All of us work together as a team. The students meet in the math labs during their trade cycle.

I will provide any important information for the upcoming cycles in the Freshman and Sophomore links on the home page of this website.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me (gregory.falla@ct.gov) or call (860-827-7736 ext 381). Rest assured, you child's learning is our primary goal; their best interest is our main concern.

For information about E.C. Goodwn and our staff, you can visit the school's website at www.cttech.org/goodwin/.

Thank you,

Greg Falla

Course Description

The purpose of the math lab is to provide students with strategies and support to help them learn and understand math. The math lab is designed to help the students succeed in their academic math class as well as their trade.

In the labs we teach prerequisites and preteach the academic content. We focus on specific skills and concepts needed to support the topics covered in the academic classroom and in trade.

We address the vocabulary the students will need. We preteach the vocabulary for upcoming units in academics.

We review and reteach. We review concepts and skills covered in previous units(cycles) in academics and we will reteach where appropriate.

We apply. We provide application problems to make connections to real life situations and trades.

We use many aspects of technology in the math Literacy Labs from SmartBoards, LCD projectors, ELMO's, Responders (handheld response systems), Powerpoints, and on-line programs. The labs are a safe environment for learning. We provide differentiated instruction and flexible grouping to help all students grow.
