Unit 6: RATIOS,PROPORTIONS, AND PERCENTS
Last updated January 2nd, 2012 at 7:07 p.m.Day 1 Vocabulary
Day 2: Ratios and Unit Rates
Let students discuss writing fractions in simplest form using the GCF from bellwork. Teach using example 1 to show how to write a ratio and how to simplify a ratio. Use example 2 to show how to compare several rates by writing them as unit rates. Use example 3 to convert the units of a rate.
Homework: Page 234, 1-11, worksheet 6.1
Day 3: Solving Proportions
Let students discuss writing and simplifying ratios using the GCF using bellwork. Teach using example 1 to show how to solve proportion. Use example 2 to determine whether or not two ratios form a proportion. Use example 3 to show how to solve a real-world problem by writing and solving a proportion.
Homework: practice 6.2
Day 4: Similar figures and scale Drawings
Let students discuss writing and solving proportion using bellwork. Teach using example 1 and 2 to show how to solve a problem involving similar figures and example 3 to solve, problems involving scale drawings. Do page 242, 1-6
Homework: practice 6.3
Day 5 & 6: Fractions Decimals and Percents
Let students discuss writing and simplifying ratios by using the GCF using bellwork. Teach using example 1 to show how to write a percent as a fraction or mixed number. Use example 2 to write a percent as a decimal, next use example 3 to show how to write a decimal as a percent. Use example 4 to show how to write a fraction as a percent. Do page 246, 1-13
Homework: practice 6.5
Day 7 & 8: Proportions and Percents
Let students discuss writing percents as decimals and fractions using their test scores. Teach using example 1 and 2 to show how to find a percent of a number with a proportion. Then use example 3 and 4 to show how to find a number when a percent of it is known. Do page 253, 1-11
Homework: practice 6.6
Day 9 & 10: Percents and Equations
Students will use bellwork to discuss solving percent problems by writing proportions. Teach using example 1 and 2 to show how to solve problems involving percents by writing and solving equations. Now use examples 3 and 4 to show how to solve real-world problems involving percents. Do page 257, 1-8
Homework: practice 6.7
Day 11: Percent of Change
Let students work in pairs to write and compare ratios to find percent of change and to discuss finding a percent of a number. Teach using example 1 and 2 to show how to find the percent of increase and 3 to show how to find the percent of decrease. Do page 261, 1-10
Homework: practice 6.8
Day 12: Mark up and Discount
Start by students using sales paper to determine the price of items on sale. Then use example 1 and 2 to show how to find the amount of mark up given the percent and use example 2 to show two ways to find the price of an item after discount. Do page 263, 33-37
Homework: practice 6.9
Day13: Unit Review
Day 14: Test
