Week of August 30th
August 30, 2010
Wow! What a wonderful first week. We had the opportunity to reconnect with old friends and make new ones. We also discussed our goals and expectations for 5th grade. In addition to all the fun, we also worked on reading and math assessments and were able to complete several science activities.
In math this week, we will complete several lessons in the first chapter of our new textbooks and will reinforce our lessons with homework in the student practice book. I hope you enjoy the new math series as much as I do. The homework is usually less than ten problems to reinforce the skills.
In language arts, students will be given their first set of spelling words for a test on Thursday. They will also take a vocabulary pre-test on Monday for a test on Friday. They will also complete comprehension activities on Island of the Blue Dolphins and will take an AR (Accelerated Reader) test on Friday. If your children have not completed the book, please help them finish by Friday.
If your child has Mrs. Wissman for math or language arts please check her website because, although we will be teaching the same curriculum, our schedules may vary.
In science we will begin our study of astronomy. Their first long term assignment will be to complete a 30-day observation log of the moon. I will send home their astrolabes on Monday to assist them with this assignment.
