Reading

Students are to read 30 minutes per night, 4 nights per week, and get their reading log signed.  Reading logs will be checked on Friday, and are worth 100 points each week.  This is homework grade is 10% of the total grade.

Students are also responsible for taking tests on their Reading Counts books when they come to class.  Each student has an assigned point goal, and meeting this goal is a value of 20% of their reading grade.

Reading Logs

By the end of the year, I would love to see students read 1,000,000 words. To achieve this goal, students are required to read at least thirty minutes four nights out of the week night or 120 minutes a week. Reading every night not only aids students in the knowledge that is gained from the material, but it increases a student's vocabulary and reading ability. The old saying, "Practice makes perfect" is very true with reading. Students should be reading books from the Reading Counts program, until after they have met their point goal for the 9 weeks.  After meeting the point goal, students can read any book that is on or close to his or her reading level, the newspaper (not the comics), and informational magazines (National Geographic, Time, Etc.). Looking at pictures does not count as reading. To prove that a student has been reading and aid in the summarizing and comprehension of what is being read; students will be recording information about what was read on a reading log. The reading log form is posted below, in the forms section of this website, and students will receive the forms in class. Students need to record all of the required information on the sheet. A parent will have to sign the bottom of each reading log. Each form represents one week's worth of reading.
