Physical Education Policy and Procedures

Connecticut Technical High School

Policy for Participation in Physical Education

Participation by students in physical education is a critical aspect of the Connecticut Technical High School educational experience. Without regular participation in physical education, a student will not receive the benefits of improving overall physical fitness nor develop essential wellness skills for life. Participation in a planned, ongoing, and systematic physical education program is vital for fostering and maintaining one’s physical health and well-being.

Through participation in physical education, students are afforded a variety of fitness experiences that will contribute to their attainment of wellness throughout life.  A thorough course of study in physical education in the Connecticut Technical High School will prepare students to be physically ready to meet the demands and challenges of work and life.  The Connecticut Technical High School’s participation policy is designed to develop in students the perseverance needed for high achievement and the confidence to demonstrate health enhancing behaviors.

The education objectives to be achieved by a participation in physical education policy are as follows:

  1. Improve overall physical fitness
  2. Develop an attitude of cooperation and responsibility in the student
  3. Place the responsibility of participation on the student
  4. Develop physical fitness skills that will promote a healthy, active lifestyle
  5. Develop an awareness of the benefits of participating in daily physical activity

  • For any medical excuse accompanied by a DOCTOR’S note, an alternate assignment will be provided to earn credit for those classes you are unable to participate in.
  • You must also have a note from your DOCTOR to return to regular participation in P.E. class.
  • Any student having a medical or physical impairment should notify the instructor/nurse immediately (i.e. allergic reactions to bee sting, seizure disorder, asthma, etc.).

Short-term Medical Excuses

  • If you do not feel well or have an injury/ailment that will prevent you from regular participation, you must get a medical excuse from the nurse to be excused from P.E. class.
  • We will ask you if you have your clothes for class.
  • Get a pass from your teacher to go to the nurse.
  • When you return from nurse, fill out a “Sign-in sheet for not dressing” form, attach the nurse’s note, and give it to your teacher during attendance.
  • You MUST make up a 1 DAY medical excuse from the nurse class by the end of next academic cycle to receive credit for that class. If you do not make the class up, it will be counted as a “0”.

Not changing for class?

  • If you do not have your clothes for class or do not choose to change and participate, you must fill out a “Sign-in sheet for not dressing” form and hand it to your teacher when you line up for attendance.
  • Not changing for class is an UNEXCUSED ABSENCE.
  • You will initially receive a ZERO for that class. You have until the end of next academic cycle to make up the class to earn up to 75% credit for that class.
  • Students who do not change for class will walk the track (or another specified area) if the PE activity is outside. If the activity is inside, those not changed will sit on the gym bleachers.

Tardy to school

  • If you come to school tardy and miss your PE class, it is considered an UNEXCUSED ABSENCE and must be made up according to Section V.
  • If you have a legitimate reason for being tardy (and an accompanying note to verify that reason from a parent/guardian/doctor/dentist), it will be considered an EXCUSED ABSENCE and must be made up according to Section IV.

Tardy to class

  • You will have a reasonable amount of time to get changed at the beginning of class.
  • If you are not standing in line when your instructor starts taking attendance, you are considered TARDY.  Penalty -  Minus 1 point from your point total for that class period

The 3 STRIKE Rule

  • If your behavior is inappropriate in class, the incident in question will be documented.
  • 3 documented behavioral incidences = exclusion from regular participation in class for the next 3 classes. You will be given alternate written assignments for those 3 classes in order to receive credit for P.E.
  • A parent/teacher/administrator conference will be arranged if any further behavioral problems occur.

Detentions

  • If you receive a detention in PE class, you will do alternate written assignments until you serve the detention.

Injured in class

  • Any student injured during the conduct of the class should inform the instructors immediately.

Lost/Found:

  • Any clothing found in the locker rooms/gym will be kept in instructor’s office for 1 month, and then get sent to Salvation Army. If you lose jewelry or other personal items, see instructors.

Lockers:

  • BOYS are assigned a lock and a locker. It is the responsibility of each student to see that his locker is kept locked and in order at all times. Students should not compromise security by sharing their locker and combination. Instructor will not give out another students’ locker combination under any circumstances. The instructor is not responsible for lost/stolen items if your locker is not locked. Lost or misplaced locks: cost is $5 to replace the lock.

  • GIRLS have the option of getting their own lock.  The combination must be given to Mrs. Murray.

  • If any lock is found on a locker and it is not issued by the school, it will be cut off.
