Second Grade Reading Goals

Each child is encouraged to read daily at home. In the classroom, we practice reading strategies and comprehension skills everyday in both whole group and small guided reading groups.

Second grade children are striving to be an independent reader on level I/J by the middle of the year. (Christmas break.) They are working to be independent on level L/M by the end of the year.

It is important that each child works to remember simple math facts without counting on fingers. Children should know their facts (for example 7+7=14, 15-6= 9) in order to be successful in the more complicated math problems they encounter in second grade.
