1. BVMS Student Handbook

BVMS Handbook - Teachers in every class have gone over various sections of our school handbook.  It is the responsibility of BVMS students and their parents to learn the content of the handbook and adhere to school and district policies.

2. Homework

Homework: Expect math homework on a daily basis except on Fridays.  Sometimes homework is to study material from handouts, notes, vocabulary words, properties of addition and multiplication (see textbook), memorize prime numbers, divisibility rules, measurement conversions, etc. Students who have not mastered their basis facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) must practice these every night.

May sixth-grade students use calculators on homework?   N0.   Reason:   The sixth grade MCT2 (state test) for math does not allow calculator usage in grade six, though it is permitted in grades 7 and 8.   HOWEVER ... Parents may use a calculator to check their child's work and have the child redo missed problems.   As you look over your child's work, make sure all work is shown -- just an answer won't do.

3. You are expected to maintain at all times:

  • Your 2-inch binder with a well-organized math section including an up-to-date Table of Contents page
  • All daily work and tests organized by M-number (math assignment number) in order behind the Table of Contents page
  • a separate math composition notebook (black and white style bound with thread, not a spiral notebook) that we refer to as the Math Journal, and
  • a math pocket folder for Accelerated Math work.

Daily Supplies for Math:

  • Pencils: 3 to 6 sharpened #2 pencils with erasers.  Students are not to impose on classmates or teachers to furnish #2 pencils. No mechanical pencils -- refilling them results in lost learning time, and scanners may not read them properly.
  • Hand pencil sharpener (with shavings container) so that class time is not spent leaving seat to use classroom pencil sharpener.
  • Looseleaf paper, scissors, and a glue stick
  • Binder with divider sections for math and other subjects
  • Composition Notebook for Math Journal (not spiral)
  • Plastic 3-pronged pocket folder for Accelerated Math packets and scan cards
  • Colored pencils, fine-tipped markers, and a yellow highlighter
  • Red pens for checking of your own work.
