C’est à toi, Level I
Workbook
Grading:
Communicating Effectively--Written 25%
Communicating Effectively--Oral 25%
“Communicating Effectively” is graded through class participation, homework assignments and test scores and reflects your ability with respect to your level of study. In other words, in this, your first year of High School French, you do not have to be a perfect French speaker or writer to score well. If you can do the assignments well and can use the specific grammar concepts effectively, you will do well. Homework is assigned, on average, 4 days a week. Often, class time is used for students to begin their homework.
Projects/Tests/Quizzes 25%
This section is made up of finalized, benchmark assessments. Your ability to focus on project items, study before announced tests and be on top of new material for pop quizzes will determine your grade. Quizzes are given weekly and generally contain a vocabulary section, a verb section, a short answer in French section, and/or a section on the particular concept studied that week (pronouns, adjectives, numbers, weather, time, etc.). They can also contain review material from the previous two weeks. There is an Interim Test each quarter, a Midterm Exam in January, and a Final Exam in June.
Portfolio/Student Ownership 25%
Student ownership and Portfolio are combined to reflect the student’s personal motivation and work ethic with respect to this class. The more you are organized and the more consistently you spend daily time on French Studies, the better your grade will be.
Remember: Class participation will not be graded according to exactness, but according to effort. As any French-speaking person will tell you, it’s not how you say it in French, it’s that you try to say it in French.

Course description: Français avancé will seek to review the basics of French grammar while building vocabulary and practicing verb tenses in the context of everyday events. The emphasis will be on the practical aspects of using French in conversation, writing, and reading of intermediate texts. Mini-skits, dialogues, and writing examples will be used to increase spoken and written fluency.
Because we are a small class with varying skill levels and varying expectations, each quarter will have its own theme, and I am relying on all of us to determine our focus and accept its importance. For the first quarter, we will begin with advanced grammar concepts, but we will quickly add two projects as we discuss our wants and needs for the class.
