Spelling Words

Spelling Program

Words Their Way  is an individualized developmental spelling, phonics, and vocabulary program in which an assessment is given to determine where to begin instruction.  Students are given words to study based on spelling patterns.  Students learn these spelling pattern features in the classroom by completing activities such as word sorting, word hunts, games, and drawing and labeling.  A spelling test will be given each Friday.

To Study Spelling Words

·Cut out the spelling word cards, and sort the words according to the “spelling feature.”

·Students should write the “spelling features” at the top of a piece of paper to make columns, and write the spelling words in the correct column.  “Oddball” words should be placed in the “oddball column.” These are words that have the same letters, but the letters make a different sound.

·To prepare for the Friday spelling test, call the words out in random order and have the children write the words in the correct column.  This will be the format for the spelling test.

·Students do not need to glue their words on paper.  The words should be used to sort during the week.

Additional activities:

·To help with reading fluency, have students sort and say the words as quickly as possible.  This speed sort can be timed so that students can see if they can “beat” their initial time.

·To help with writing and spelling, have students write sentences with their words.
