We are currently reading The Girl Who Owned a City by O.T. Nelson. It is about a 10 year old girl who has to try to find ways to keep herself and her brother alive in a world where no adults are present. A plague swept the earth and killed every person over the age of 13. This book, put in the terms of the main character explains the following: Thinking is the key to survival. How on earth will she do it? No power, no water, no technology, no nothing. What is she to do?

We have been reading off and on about the Girl Who Owned a City. This book is particularly becoming interesting, because of the amazing ideas these kids are formulating all in an effort to rebuild their society. However, they are also being faced with very difficult situations, particularly BULLYING. Which, is why we are tying this book into lessons about bullying; what is it, what does it look like, what does it sound like, and how does it make us feel? We will continue discussing these issues, while reading our book for the remainder of the 9 weeks period.

We are nearing the final chapters of our book and it is really getting good! The kids have enjoyed the reading of this book and are excited to find out how it ends! The main character in this book, Lisa, has developed a city for the remaining kids to ban together for survival. They have moved into the old high school and set up an infirmary, a shop for building, a defense plan, school rooms, and living quarters.
I don't know about you, but I don't think I could have ever devised such a workable plan in a million years! What an astute 10 year old, this Lisa must be! :)
