Chapter 12
The intermediate students will be studying Chapter 12: Ohio Government and You.
Yesterday the children were introduced to the study skill of previewing Tier 3 vocabulary words before reading a lesson. The children worked in groups and created flashcards on quizlet.com for the words on page 314. Each group has their own username and password written in their Social Studies notebook. They can access their work and create games to study their words. They should spend five to ten minutes, Monday through Thursday, reviewing their words. There are three lessons in all, and we will be practiciting this study skill before reading each lesson. They will have time to create some, if not all, of their cards in class. If they do not complete their cards in class, they can finish that work at home.
If computer access is a challenging matter at home, I would encourage old fashioned flash cards made out of index cards. These, too should be studied daily.
After Easter the students will be signing up for current event presentations on Fridays. Please ask your child (after Easter break) for which Friday he or she has signed up. You may want to guide your child's reading. They may choose from a news article, a feature article, or an editorial that has to do with Ohio government, events, or history. I have told the children that I do not want articles about automobile accidents or crime. More specific details will be sent home on an assignment sheet with a rubric.
