Welcome Back Term Two
Term Four– 2010
Welcome back from the Easter holidays. I trust that you have enjoyed a well deserved rest and it seems like all the children had a wonderful holiday. Thank you all for my lovely gifts and shopping voucher for my wedding. We had a lovely time and I'm getting nervous preparing for our big move. All seems to have gone well last week and Bridget and I are making sure that all is in order by the time she takes over. This term we have many exciting activities to look forward to.
In mathematics this term we will be focusing on grouping and then moving onto basic multiplication and division. It is important that the learners continue to practice counting in 2’s, 3’s, 4’s, 5’s and 10’s to make this easier. We will also be working on our bonds to 20 and will send more flashcards home during the term for daily practice. We will also be expanding on doubling and halving.
In literacy we will continue with our daily reading focusing on expression, fluency and comprehension. We will be sending more sight word flash cards home within the term to be practiced daily. All the terms spelling words and dictation sentences are under the literacy section.
The themes for the second term are:
Science
How things change.
We will be conducting many fun experiments this term. We will be learning how things change shape and form when exposed to heat and cold. Probably the most fun and exciting experiment is when we bake crunchies in class. I am sure it is the tasting afterwards that is most enjoyed, but the whole experiment definitely goes down a treat! This theme links with outing this term to the Coca cola factory. I would like to thank Mrs. Engelbrecht for organising this excursion for us.
History
Holidays to the Seaside
In history this term we will be learning about holidays in the past, especially to the seaside. The children learn all about an olden seaside holiday, from the transport of a steam train to the type of swimming costumes worn. We discuss how seaside holidays came about and the pupils learn how to compare the past and present.
Geography
The sea
This is a wonderful theme especially with our proximity to the ocean. We start the theme with map work and continue with the pupils learning all about the tides and the importance of preserving the sand dunes. We discuss the various currents that flow around and the oceans surrounding South Africa. This is a wonderfully informative theme and is enjoyed by all learners as they are able to talk from personal experience.
Afrikaans
We continue with our theme of all about me, but broaden it to our house and the food we eat. We discuss various vocabularies about healthy and unhealthy food. Then we learn the various room and items in our home.
If you have any books or objects for our displays they will be most welcome.
Thank you for all your support.
