        Genetic Disorder Brochure Project

Project Assignment:

 

In Science you will create a tri-fold brochure for a doctor’s office waiting room.  The brochure should provide patients with information about one genetic disorder.  You will choose and sign up for your disorder in class.  Assume that most of the patients of your audience are adults with a typical high school science background.  The brochure should be creative as well as informative. As people enter the doctor’s waiting room, you want them to pick up and read your brochure. 

 

Brochure: 

 

After researching the disorder, make an informational pamphlet that could be given to patients.  The pamphlet must be no larger than 8.5 x 11 unfolded.  It must fully inform the reader of all issues pertaining to the genetic disorder. Again, use the questions provided below to guide your research. Your brochure will be graded based on accuracy, completeness, and creativity. Visual representations (pictures, graphs, etc.) should be incorporated into the brochure. 

 

These sample questions should help guide you as you are researching your disorder.

3. What causes the disorder?
4. What gene or chromosome is affected by this disorder?
5. Are there prenatal tests that could identify this disorder?
6. What are the symptoms?
7. What populations of people are affected by this disorder?
8. How is the disorder inherited?  If so, how?
9. What kind of medical assistance will the affected person need? Will they need continued assistance with the disorder?  What is the long term outlook for the person with this disorder?
10. Are there any treatments or cures?
11. Could this disorder be prevented?
12. Can this person have children in the future with this disorder?
13. What resources or supports do we have in our community or internet support are available to the family or person with the disorder?
14. Is there a cure in the near future?

You will need to prepare, on a separate sheet, a properly formattedworks cited page that identifies all sources used to make the brochure. At least three sources are required for this project. More than three is acceptable, and encouraged! (Be sure to use proper format; do not just list websites, list author, title, date, etc.).  You may use citationmachine.net to assist you in formatting your work cited page. Give credit for graphics you did not make.
